Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The North Carolina Small Business & Technology Development Center ( SBTDC ) is an inter-institutional program within the University of North Carolina. The SBTDC is committed to providing knowledge, education, and other supportive resources that enable existing small and mid-sized businesses, emerging entrepreneurs, and local/state leaders to innovate and succeed. Through the experience and skill of SBTDC staff across a statewide network of 16 university-affiliated offices, the SBTDC is able to reach and serve a diverse client base and quickly support changing needs. SBTDC connectivity within the University System allows access to faculty, staff, graduate student teams, and interns for client-centered projects.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The North Carolina Small Business & Technology Development Center ( SBTDC ) Business Counselor counsels, researches, trains, and provides technical assistance services to small business owners, inventors, and those planning to start a new business. This position provides a broad range of advice and assistance for leveraging and supervising other staff and volunteer resources. The counselor provides business counseling, advice, and teaching outreach seminars on feasibility assessment, business plan development, marketing advice, financial analysis, loan package preparation, personnel, accounting, human resources, purchasing, research, and development. The position provides in-depth, confidential, individualized counseling and technical assistance to a sizable client group throughout the six county region served by the Southeastern Regional Center.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions,

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

Bachelor’s degree and seven years of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience in small business management or small business lending
