Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

As part of School of Medicine Technology Services (SOMTech) team and Application Services (AS) unit, this position will perform application development and systems design functions to support 1) Implementation of DevOps processes, solutions and tools 2) the development of custom, homegrown School of Medicine ( SOM ) application software solutions and 3) ensuring seamless data-integration with commercial solutions.

This position reports to the Assistant Director for Application Development and will help support DevOps processes, solutions and tools in addition to supporting a broad portfolio of administrative, business intelligence, financial and educational systems for the School of Medicine, MCV Physicians, and the VCU Health Science campus.

This position will require an understanding DevOps processes, solutions and tools in addition to SOM business and academic processes, data-driven decision making, and excellent communication and people skills to offer recommendations and solutions to leadership and stakeholders.
• Work with the Client Services team for infrastructure, administration, and overall management needs of the DevOps server.
• Explore DevOps processes, solutions,
and architecture patterns with a primary focus on development standardization, documentation, and overall efficiency.
• Research, build, test, and set up modern tools and extensions such as Git, Jenkins, Puppet, Chef, Maven, Ant, Ivy, UrbanCode, Docker, etc., with a primary focus on improving developer productivity.
• Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines to optimize processes, people, and tools for automated build, delivery, and software release.
• Implement, standardize and manage project collections, projects, code repository, code merges, testing, and quality checks.
• Work with the developers and software engineers to ensure that the development operation follows established processes and works as intended.
• Execute multiple software development projects across a Microsoft technology stack (C#, ASP . MVC, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5/CSS3, SQL Server, SSRS, SSIS, Azure DevOps, Bootstrap, . NET /. NET Core) for applications with n-tier architectures.
• Apply modern application development principles, methodologies and standardized tools to advance SOM business initiatives and capabilities.
• Coordinate with AS leadership to identify and translate business logic processes, workflows, output needs into system requirements and specifications.
• Ensure system modifications, user requests and updates follow established change management and project management processes. Advise users on problem resolutions and alternative approaches.
• Write and maintain documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.

Minimum Hiring Standards

● DevOps and Process Management – Knowledge of Agile delivery management; DevOps server management, processes, solutions and tools.
● Experience with the Microsoft technology stack (C#, ASP . MVC, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5/CSS3, SQL Server, SSRS, SSIS, Azure DevOps, Bootstrap, . NET /. NET Core).
● Application Delivery Process – Knowledge of major tasks, deliverables, and formal application delivery methodologies; ability to utilize these in order to deliver new or enhanced applications.
● Application Design, Architecture – Knowledge of application design activities, tools and techniques; ability to utilize these to convert business requirements and logical models into a technical application design.
● Application Development Tools – Knowledge of and ability to utilize a variety of specific tools and toolkits for the development and support of applications.
● Application Testing – Knowledge of application testing and ability to design, plan and execute application testing strategies and tactics to ensure software quality throughout all stages of application development.
● Application Integration – Knowledge of and the ability to deploy application software and integrate it with multiple data sources and systems, databases and technology platforms.
● System Development Life Cycle – Knowledge of project management techniques and the ability to plan, design, develop, test, implement and maintain system development life cycle segments and phases.
● Technical Troubleshooting – Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques, and the ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical (hardware, software, application or operational) problems.
● Proven presentation and communication (written and oral) skills
● Willingness and ability to quickly expand technical skills, capabilities, and understanding and apply to solution development.
● Ability to work in a diverse environment required.
