Statement of Job:
This temporary staff member is responsible for day-to-day operation of the day camps. Each camp consists of up to 16 campers, ages 9 to 17, depending on the camp. Responsibilities include working with the campers and other staff, giving short educational presentations to the campers, securing of the facility (room), resolving equipment problems, and in general providing the mentorship for the campers. Camps may include local (walking) field trips or transported field trips.
Camps are being run in Portland, Gorham, Augusta, Bangor, and Camden.
Training provided either during the first week of camps and/or the last week of June.
Supervises: Up to 16 campers.
Reports to: Camp leader.
Duration: 1-5 weeks depending on location

Compensation: Ranges from $12.15-16.15/hr dependent upon educational attainment, degrees, and experience. Counselors are expected to work between 35 and 40 hours per week. Overtime is unusual and requires prior approval from the STEM Outreach Director. Per an ordinance within the Portland Act to Increase Minimum Wage and in keeping with the current State of Civil Emergency, USM hourly employees, must be paid a minimum of 1.5x the Portland minimum wage, equal to $18.23/hr, for all hours physically worked on any USM campus. This is in effect as long as the Governor maintains a State of Civil Emergency and is subject to change pending final Court action on the ordinance.
About us: USM’s STEM Outreach Program now runs the Maine Robotics programs, the Southworth Planetarium, and coordinates the numerous K-12 STEM outreach programs that reside at the University of Southern Maine.
