Assistant Director for Employment, Compliance and Workforce Diversity
The Assistant Director for Employment and Workforce Diversity (ADEWD) is a key member of the Human Resources Department and the College’s diversity leadership team. This position is responsible for leading the design, implementation and assessment of the College Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies, processes and initiatives that support a campus environment that is inclusive, equitable, diverse and free from discrimination, harassment, bias and retaliation. This role is responsible for the College’s recruitment and retention policies and practices and serves as a strategic resource for hiring managers throughout the recruitment process. This position is responsible for receiving and investigating complaints against faculty or staff involving allegations of discrimination, harassment, bias activities and/or retaliation. This position is also responsible for developing and ensuring delivery of compliance-related training on topics such as unlawful harassment, protection of minors, equal employment opportunity and diversity. This position serves as the point of contact for all faculty, staff and union employees regarding reasonable accommodations.
Essential job functions:
- Serves on the College’s diversity leadership team and provides leadership and input in identifying diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals in employment. Researches, develops, recommends and executes creative strategies to foster the College's DEI goals in hiring, employment and retention.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures regarding recruitment and hiring practices for the College’s decentralized hiring process and ensures compliance with law and College policies throughout the hiring process.
- Plays a key role in the hiring process identifying and implementing strategies to recruit and retain a diverse staff, including identifying appropriate recruitment sources, providing training, and reference information/materials to hiring managers in preparation for applicant interviews and offering other appropriate assistance to hiring managers to achieve diverse applicant pools and to promote EEO for staff positions.
- Reviews current employment practices and policies, assessing and analyzing the extent to which they align with applicable law and best practices, and support or hinder the College's DEI goals in hiring, employment and retention. Proactively explores data and trends that impede equal employment opportunity. Recommends and assists with revising, updating and developing policies and programs to attract, retain and promotes a diverse and inclusive workforce.
- Participates in the onboarding and orientation programs addressing EEO, non-discrimination, anti-harassment and sexual misconduct reporting and prevention. Identifies and assists with implementation of best practices for onboarding a diverse workforce.
- In collaboration with the College’s diversity leadership team, initiates and develops programs, training sessions, workshops and discussions to foster institutional awareness of, and commitment to, student, faculty and staff diversity goals, including diversity, equity and inclusion awareness and equal opportunity for all qualified candidates for hiring and promotion. Partners with stakeholders to deliver annual required compliance training, such as anti-harassment and protection of minors. Serves as a member of the Committee on Intercultural and Global Understanding (CIGU) and the Bias Response Group (BRG).
- Receives all complaints regarding potential violations of the College’s Equal Employment Opportunity policies. Conducts or oversees the investigation process and partners with external investigators when appropriate to ensure compliance of state and federal laws and College policy and procedure for complaints of discrimination, bias, harassment, sexual misconduct, violence against women and workplace violence. In an effort to ensure working environments that are free of any unlawful discrimination, provides annual reporting data related to compliance and oversight of Title VI and Title VII.
- Receives and leads the interactive process for requests for reasonable accommodations. Provides support and guidance to employees and supervisors with respect to reasonable accommodations.
- Supervises the Employment Coordinator who works with department chairs and supervisors to determine needs for open positions and coordinates the requisition and pre-hire process for all staff positions on campus.
- Works with other stakeholders in HR to audit key employment and recruitment practices such as I-9 compliance and adherence to the College’s background screening protocols. Reviews and determines next steps for adverse background checks in accordance with applicable law.
- Partners with the Vice President for Strategic Planning and Institutional Diversity, Chief Human Resources Officer and other campus stakeholders/constituents on diversity initiatives with a particular focus on initiatives that relate to the employee experience as well as initiatives aimed at improving the recruitment and retention of diverse employees.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, participating in cross-functional human resources projects as assigned based on annualized goals or departmental needs.
Education: Master’s degree in human resources, business, organizational development or closely related field or terminal degree in a related field.
Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience in recruitment, employee relations, diversity, equity and inclusion and organizational development.
- Ability to communicate effectively, genuinely and empathetically, in all channels, to stakeholders at all levels.
- Comfortable presenting to large audiences.
- Strong aptitude for leading, influencing and managing change.
- Working knowledge of federal/state laws and regulations related to employment, including but not limited to EEO, ADA, FLSA, FMLA and Title IX.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and handle multiple priorities.
- Ability to utilize technology applications (word processing, HRIS systems, presentation and other appropriate software)
