Taylor University, founded in 1846, is an evangelical, independent, interdenominational Christian liberal arts university that has consistently been ranked as the #1 Midwest regional college by U.S. News and World Report.  Taylor is seeking a Provost with experience teaching undergraduates, administrative responsibility in higher education administration, and involvement with new program development and/or virtual learning technologies in higher education.  The Provost will be a vital member of the President’s Senior Leadership Team in leading the institution and a key partner to the President on myriad issues.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate the maturity of a seasoned leader with the innovative spirit of an academic entrepreneur.  Above all, Taylor seeks a Provost whose involvement in Christian higher education is more a calling than a career.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate or an appropriate terminal degree along with a minimum of five years of experience in higher education. All candidates should have experience teaching undergraduates, administrative responsibility in higher education, and involvement with new program development and/or virtual learning technologies in higher education. We are seeking an experienced leader in Christian higher education administration who will have the respect of our faculty and lead the academic division in a new season of academic program development, which also includes growth in non-traditional academic offerings.

The preferred candidate will demonstrate substantive personal credibility with a demeanor that engenders trust and confidence among the University’s faculty, staff, administration, and trustees. The Provost must be fully committed
to maintaining the integration of the life of the mind and an authentic Christian witness. Ultimately, the Provost is a key advocate for Taylor’s work and witness along with the University’s unique culture, representing the faculty
and responding to stakeholders, advancing Taylor’s reputation as a flagship institution in Christian higher education, and bolstering the University’s profile within the wider academy. Because of the large number of faculty and staff within the Provost’s portfolio of responsibilities, the ideal candidate will be interpersonally gifted, be able to listen well, and have experience demonstrating wisdom in addressing personnel issues. This leader will have prior experience and acumen hiring mission-appropriate faculty. As the University’s chief academic officer, the Provost is directly accountable to the President. The Provost will be a vital member of the President’s Senior Leadership Team in leading the institution and a key partner to the President on myriad issues.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the maturity of a seasoned leader with the innovative spirit of an academic entrepreneur. She or he must blend a data-driven approach with creative thinking and innovative problem solving.
It will be important for the Provost to be a forward-thinking, visionary, and decisive leader who moves the institution forward. The preferred candidate will bring prior experience with entrepreneurial innovations, along with the ability to launch them at Taylor. The Provost will build connections between industry and the academy and help further a vision for a liberal arts education that is also practical. She or he will need to be able to stretch resources to meet current needs while also building a base of support for new academic initiatives in the years ahead.

The Provost, like all Taylor faculty and staff, is expected to live in a vital relationship with Jesus Christ and have a strong sense of calling to this work in this moment. In leading the University’s academic life, the Provost should be guided by biblical principles. The ideal candidate will be a zealous advocate for Christian orthodoxy and Taylor’s Gospel-shaped identity. The selected candidate will have a record of active involvement in Christian ministry and local church life and can enthusiastically support the University’s foundational documents. The candidate will reflect godly character shaped by daily spiritual disciplines, an excellent work ethic, confident humility, and impeccable integrity. The Provost must strongly embrace the institutional value that an ethnically and racially diverse community brings to Taylor. She or he must have the personal energy and resilience to lead a complex, growing academic community with wisdom, grace, and love.
