The Assistant Director of Operations and Student Engagement, Online Programs leads initiatives to ensure a high-quality experience for students enrolled in SIS online degree programs. Oversees the student on-boarding process, including admissions processing and new student orientation functions. Responsible for the management and development of in-person Immersion experiences and regional receptions, including budgetary management. Serves as the primary liaison to student groups to ensure integration with SIS student community and governance, and leads efforts to grow strategic participation in co-curricular opportunities.

The incumbent serves as the primary campus liaison and academic advisor for students enrolled in the online Master of Arts in International Relations program, and manages programmatic functions in collaboration with faculty program director. Directly manages a team of 3 part-time student employees and part-time tutors. This position will also collaborate extensively with employees of SIS’ third-party online provider in order to provide a seamless experience for online students.

Essential Functions

1. Management of MAIR Program Advising and Student Support: Carry out advising with a focus on ensuring excellence in graduate academic affairs and high satisfaction in professional graduate student advising. Assist students with course sequencing, registration, and academic program planning. Respond to inquiries made in person, or via telephone, email, fax, or written correspondence. Contact other university departments to clarify information, as necessary, and advocate for an efficient, timely, and accurate resolution on behalf of the student. Provide self-service training to students and ensure they are familiar with the self-service capabilities and information available through the portal and the online learning platform. Encourage students to identify their goals and utilize career development resources to explore relevant co-curricular, cross-cultural, and professional opportunities. Identify areas of concern or risk signs and provide referrals to campus resources as appropriate.

2. Management of Online Student Development and Programming: Leads the planning and implementation of events and initiatives to build community engagement among distance learners. Responsible for the management and development of in-person Immersion experiences and regional receptions, including budgetary management. Manages logistics in preparation for multiple annual commencement ceremonies as it relates to distance students. Serves as the primary liaison to student groups to ensure integration with SIS student community and governance, and leads efforts to grow participation in co-curricular opportunities, including international programs. Primary responsibility for researching, compiling, and disseminating co-curricular content developed via in-house video production and recording of SIS events.

3. Admissions Operations and New Student On-Boarding: Oversees student on-boarding, including the admissions decision process and new student orientation functions. Liaises with faculty program directors and third-party technology vendor to ensure consistency of admissions criteria, marketing, and admission and scholarship decision process. Leads efforts to convert and on-board newly-admitted online students, including webinars, orientation, and handbooks. Oversees deposit and deferrals for online programs in SIS.

4. Program Management: Serves as the primary staff liaison with faculty program director for MAIR program leadership and strategy. Develops and manages student communications, including webinars, newsletters, and list-servs. In collaboration with faculty program director, determines course sequencing and offering schedule.

5. Manage Student Staff and Third-Party Vendor Relations:Hires, on-boards, and trains student staff and tutors to support and provide an optimal learning experience for distance learners. This includes assigning work, monitoring time and attendance, coaching, evaluating performance, and seeking opportunities to develop staff skills and knowledge. Ensures consistent and accurate communication with third party vendor.

6. Additional Projects as Assigned: Conducts additional projects as assigned by the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships and Career Services.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • It is a temporary position for time period from July to approximately November.
  • 35 hrs/week for the first three months and then 27 hr/week after that

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree and knowledge of international relations field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years administrative, higher education or related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Prior work experience providing or supporting academic advising is preferred.
