Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

As a member of the School of Medicine Dean’s Office of Research Administration team, the Financial Specialist will be primarily responsible for serving as the principal financial staff person for assigned Centers & Institutes (C/I). The individual must be able to work independently under the direction of the Supervisor with responsibility for managing C/I budget, and finance as assigned by SOM . The Financial Specialist will be responsible for maintaining effective financial operating procedures for assigned C/Is that are consistent with University and State policies. The incumbent will work closely with their Supervisor, C/I Directors and leadership in the SOM office of Research Administration to develop strategic initiatives for assigned C/Is and will provide data to leadership to monitor financial performance in meeting strategic goals and performance targets.

The Financial Specialist will manage the day to day financial operations of assigned C/Is, specifically monitoring: budget and fiscal transactions for all funding sources, ARMICS (Agency Risk Management & Inventory Control Standards), fixed assets, and other aspects identified in assigned areas. In addition to day to day financial operations of C/Is the Business Manager will also provide support in managing financial accounts within the SOM Office of Research Administration under the direction of SOMRA Leadership.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Strong problem solving, analytical, organizational, and time management skills are essential, including ability to adapt to frequent changes in work assignments being able to prioritize and manage competing priorities and deadlines effectively. Must be precise, thorough, and reliable with the ability to perform daily activities with minimal supervision. Must have excellent customer service skills, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Experience with budget development and management, expense forecasting, procurement, journal entries, general ledger account management, and monthly financial reporting. Must be proficient in the use of MS Office products with demonstrated experience using spreadsheets or databases to organize, maintain, and report information to various customers. Ability to work in a diverse environment is required. Working knowledge of state/university purchasing, accounting policies and procedures is a plus.

Preferred Hiring Standards

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or related field, or an equivalent combination of college and related experience; and/or several years of experience in financial administration in a university or nonprofit setting. Knowledge of Banner and/or OnCore systems is preferred. Prior experience with financial management in an academic medical center
