The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for TWO (2) faculty positions of Counselor, English Performance Success, De Anza College.

NATURE AND SCOPE
Under the direction and supervision of the Dean of Language Arts, provide a wide range of counseling and retention services to our diverse student population in English Performance Success courses and programs. Perform core counseling functions: academic, career, and personal counseling as well crisis intervention, outreach, college governance participation, program review and research, research counseling program and services best practices, training and professional development and other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION
In accordance with the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP), Student Equity Initiative, and Basic Skills Initiative, counselors will deliver core services as their primary duties and responsibilities.
  • Orientation
  • Assessment (evaluation of placement scores, course placement, transcripts, prerequisite clearance)
  • Counseling/Advising and other education planning services
  • Follow-up for disproportionately impacted students

The delivery of core services should occur both on- and off-campus in multiple ways: in-person, on-line, individual and group meetings, workshops and other innovative ways.

In collaboration with the Dean of Language Arts, department chairs and faculty in English and ESL, develop effective retention interventions to reduce the achievement gap for disproportionately impacted student populations (Latino/a, African Ancestry, Filipino students) and groups identified in the College Student Equity Plan: Veterans, Foster Youth, Disabled Students, First-Generation Students, LGBTQ+, and low-income students. Address the counseling and advising needs of students who place into courses supported by English Performance Success and students transitioning from Adult Education schools.

Provide orientation, career, transfer, discipline-related, student success (study skills, time management, academic probation) workshops. Provide staff development and in-service training for faculty and staff who teach EPS courses and the Language Arts Division. Participate in college and division assignments and other departmental responsibilities. May teach certain counseling related courses (Introduction to College, Career Life Planning, Life Skills in Higher Education). Establish and maintain contact with K-12 and Adult Education partners. Serve as a liaison and develop other relevant networks with on- and off-campus programs and agencies.

The successful candidate will utilize intervention and retention strategies to ensure student success. Establish an effective rapport with students; monitor and track students' academic progress to ensure attainment of educational goal; maintain contact with students throughout their enrollment; and use an early alert system to ensure student persistence and success. Serve as liaison with other student services and instructional divisions and programs on campus such as Learning in Communities (LinC), Student Success and Retention Services, MPS, EOPS, and DSPS. Refer students as appropriate to campus and community resources and services. Maintain assigned caseload of students. Collect retention, priority registration activities, course completion, and/or transfer data to report to program and campus administrators and the State Chancellor's Office.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attendance at instructional department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of a Counselor. Counselors also have the opportunity to serve on District and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge:
  1. Knowledge of and the skills to provide services to multiethnic, international and disproportionately impacted students.
  2. Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the needs of disproportionately impacted students in reading and writing courses, English language learners, and students transitioning from adult education programs.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with computers, software, online education, and technology related to counseling.
  4. Knowledge of and experience in establishing and maintaining connections with instructional divisions and special programs.
  5. Knowledge of and experience in consensus building within a diverse educational environment.

Skills and Abilities:
  1. Ability to serve as a liaison and network with on and off campus programs and agencies.
  2. Ability to develop and provide trainings for faculty and staff.
  3. Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and facilitation skills both in-person and on-line.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work with disproportionately impacted student groups, students who place into English Performance Success courses, and students interested in transfer or career and technical education courses and careers.
  2. Coursework or training related to cross-cultural perspectives.
  3. Knowledge of or training related to English and ESL reading and writing instruction.
  4. Knowledge of or training related to Adult Education programs.
  5. Demonstrated interest in or knowledge of social media platforms or other applications used for communicating with students.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:
  1. Indoor, office environment. Occasionally in the environment where students' meet and congregate.
  2. Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include summer, evening, weekend, on- and off-campus assignments.
  3. Counselors may be required to participate in workshops, high school visits, field trips and other activities, both on and off campus, requiring physical capabilities beyond a stand office environment.
