Post-doctoral Position in Bat Disease Ecology
Job No: 496702
Position Type: full-time
Location: Lewisburg, PA
Categories: Academic Affairs, Other, Postdoc / Research
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratories of Dr. DeeAnn Reeder and Dr. Ken Field in the Department of Biology at Bucknell University. The preferred starting date is between June 1, 2021 and September 1, 2021. This is a one-year position with the likelihood of renewal.
This position is funded by a five-year R01 from NIAID/NIH “Tolerance and resistance responses of African bats to viral antigens: Immunological tradeoffs in zoonotic reservoir hosts”. The goals of the project are to (1) understand the role that infection tolerance plays in the ability of African bat species to serve as reservoir hosts for virulent zoonotic viruses, and (2) identify the molecular and behavioral mechanisms that contribute to these tolerance phenotypes. Three species will be studied in Uganda using an Ebola virus-like-particle (eVLP) challenge model in which the interplay between bat heterothermy and immune function will also be explored. Duties for this position will combine both field and captive animal work together with molecular/immunological methods and bioinformatics to measure physiological and immune responses. The postdoctoral fellow will spend ~ half of their time in Uganda each year. Previous experience with field biology (in bats and/or international), comparative ecoimmunology, molecular tools, and/or bioinformatics preferred. Applicants with strengths in any one of these areas are encouraged to apply.
Candidate must have a Ph.D. in biology or a related field and proficiency in oral and written English language skills. Applications must be made online at: jobs.bucknell.edu.
Application materials should include three documents:
1. Cover letter that addresses your qualifications for and interest in this particular position,
2. Curriculum Vitae,
3. Contact information for at least three potential references that the committee may contact to request letters, if necessary.
Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled.
