The Coordinator for Leader Development Experiences exists to create, develop, implement, and assess leader development experiences for all students at James Madison University through the staff and resources of the Student Leadership Center, which is part of the Student Life Department at James Madison University. This position also provides collaborative support for the advancement of leader development opportunities and experiences for students across the entire campus with personnel from both academic and student affairs departments.

 

Additionally, this position provides consultative support and encouragement for the development and delivery of leadership programs by other departments. This position participates in the delivery of student employee training as requested by supervisors and department heads in the division of Student Affairs.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Direct, manage, maintain, recruit participants, teach HRD 475 for student staff, and be fiscally responsible for Make Your Mark On Madison.
  • Develop and submit a proposal for a leadership-based Residential Learning Community (RLC), including the teaching of HON 200 for student participants in the community. Implement and manage the RLC upon approval.
  • Supervise, provide educational support for, and ensure appropriate professional development experiences are available to graduate students in the Student Leadership Center in roles as graduate assistants or in practicum experiences.
  • Develop, direct, and regularly report on the assessment of assigned leader development experiences, ensuring that key learning outcomes are established, assessment measures are implemented, and results are incorporated into future iterations of programming efforts.
  • Serve as a consultant and collaborative partner to student organizations, personnel within the department and in other departments in Student Affairs, as well as to faculty, to assist in the creation and implementation of their leader development experiences for students.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Have a Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel Administration or related field
  • Demonstrate experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities (graduate school assistantship work accepted).
  • Be highly skilled at using a wide range of modalities and pedagogical techniques to teach and engage students in a higher education academic environment for them to effectively learn the critical skills, strategies, and practices for the development of their own and others’ leadership capabilities.
  • Be highly skilled in both the development of materials for, and the delivery of, impactful and engaging presentations, training sessions, and workshops.
  • Be knowledgeable in basic marketing skills, social media platforms, recruitment techniques, and supervisory skills.
  • Be current on research and trends in the field of leadership studies.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office software.
  • Possess the ability to lift light objects of 25 pounds or less. Limited use of highly specialized equipment and/or machinery.
  • This role requires flexible hours, such a late week nights and weekend work.
  • Preference is given to candidates who possess a working knowledge of, and the ability to practically apply, leadership and educational theories, such as the Student Leadership Challenge, the Intent Based Leadership Model, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership for Students, Strengths Based Leadership, and Experiential Learning Theory, as well as college student development theories.
