The Division of Academic Affairs encompasses a wide array of activities and functions that ensure the overall academic quality of the institution. This includes providing administrative oversight and academic leadership for: the College of Business Administration; the College of Arts, Social Sciences & Humanities; the College of Science and Health; the School of Education; Murphy Library; Admissions; Records and Registration; Financial Aid; Career Services; Academic Advising; University Graduate Studies; Extended Learning; the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; the office of Undergraduate Research and Creativity; the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning; Institutional Research; and International Education & Engagement. Academic Affairs also provides leadership and support to the nearly four hundred full-time faculty and instructional academic staff, 73 percent of whom hold terminal degrees. Through its various functions, the Division of Academic Affairs supports students in the pursuit of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education as well as scholarly activity.

Position Summary

The Academic Advisor reports to the Interim Assistant Director or Director of Academic Advising Center & Career Services, and works as part of an advising team to advise students, including undeclared students, first-year students with select declared majors, and/or pre-health students, about their major and career options. Responsibilities include working with
students to assist and assess academic needs and performance, helping students plan their coursework to progress to degree completion, planning and presenting outreach programs, developing educational materials, and partnering with advising staff and faculty. On occasion, the advisor may work weekend and evening hours.
There are 2 positions available:
Academic Advisor (10 month position)
Academic Advisor – Pre-Health (11 month position)

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a relevant field required by start date.
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated expertise in using office software packages, email, and student record systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience advising undeclared or pre-health majors.
• Knowledge of WINGS /Peoplesoft.
• Experience with college students in academic advising.
• Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to be thorough, consistent, and accurate in the interpretation of policies

• Provide developmental, proactive advising to UWL students, with particular focus on
undeclared students, first-year students with select declared majors, and/or pre-health
students as well as UWL students who are currently considering a change of major/
minor, resulting in the student’s ability to set personal goals, and to make well-informed
educational, career, and life choices to achieve those goals.
• Provide individualized academic advising to assigned and unassigned advisees.
• Provide individual referrals of students to other UWL service offices.
• Provide academic advising in group settings.
• Explain UWL General Education program and provide assistance to students.
• Advise UWL students (individually and in groups) on issues related to professional &
career planning (in workshops and other venues).
• Advise UWL students on issues related to post-graduate education.
• Assist students with computer-based resources including career and academic
exploration tools, online assessments and job search resources.

• The Pre-Health Academic Advisor will also assist with classroom activities of HP 106 “Introduction to Health Careers”
