Position Summary
The Cashier will provide support within Retail and Residential Operations food and beverage locations by performing cashier duties and additional miscellaneous tasks in support of food service functions. They will be responsible for totaling items purchased from the menu and entering into a register, receiving money, processing credit/meal cards, making change and counting and verifying tills on sales report. They may assist in food service, restock merchandise, clean and organize guest areas, and train student cashiers.

While providing this support, the position will interact with the resident student customers in a helpful and courteous manner to provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional demeanor in stressful or confrontational situations. This position adheres to the Service Standards set by Housing Food Services and exhibits appropriate professional behavior creating a respectful and inclusive work environment.

This is a full-time, 9-month, academic year position, with the potential for summer work within University Housing. Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Schedules may change based upon the operational needs of the unit.

Work conditions and physical demands are typical of those found in the food service industry. These conditions may include slippery floors, extreme temperatures, heavy lifting, and standing for long periods.

Special Requirements
  • Must have, or ability to obtain, a Lane County Food Handler's card within 2 weeks of employment.
  • Must take and be able to understand Hazard Communication Training supplied by employer.

    Essential Personnel:
    This position requires the employee to make every reasonable effort to arrive at campus at their regularly scheduled times during inclement weather and/or university closures unless otherwise notified by their supervisor or manager. This includes times when the university may be closed. Essential personnel must provide reliable and current contact information at all times.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Six months of cashiering experience exchanging money for purchases and making change.
  • Training or experience should have included operating a calculator or ten-key adding machine by touch, and using a computer and keyboard.

    Some positions may require the capacity to be bonded.

    Professional Competencies
  • Ability to accurately count back change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain professional demeanor during rush periods.
  • Ability to prioritize duties.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the hospitality industry.
  • Experience with Micros POS system cash register system.
