Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI) is the largest private medical research institute in Wisconsin. MCRI is the research division of Marshfield Clinic, an integrated multispecialty health care system with over 700 physicians and 50+ regional centers. MCRI consists of research centers in clinical research, agricultural health and safety, epidemiology, human genetics, biomedical informatics and integrated laboratory services. It also provides a range of support services for physician and scientist investigators, including biostatistics, protocol and grant preparation, research publication and core laboratory support.

The Associate Research Scientist maintains and conducts a high quality research program to achieve the organizational goals and results within the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI). The research activities are determined by the Center Director and there may be opportunities to participate in and receive some funding from existing funded research projects. Positions are classified as tenure or non-tenure track based on organizational need at time of hire.

This individual will work collaboratively with various leaders throughout the Marshfield Clinic Health System, as well as external parties, to substantially contribute to the Trauma Research Program’s primary mission of designing and executing quality research and scholarly activity to meet and exceed the research requirements and standards established for level 1 trauma center designation. This role is responsible for collaborating with trauma research program scientists and clinician investigators on study design, protocol development, grant writing, manuscript preparation, scientific presentations, and other scholarly activities. This individual will serve as a key contact for trauma research within Marshfield Clinic Health System and is the focal point for assuring level 1 trauma research requirements are completed within timeframes and budgets.

This individual will be knowledgeable on the Level 1 trauma center research and scholarly requirements set forth by the American College of Surgeons. Regularly assessment and status reports of the trauma program’s research and scholarly activities will be performed. Generation of novel research ideas or development of research concepts with the clinicians, formulation of program goals, oversight of projects and studies and successful publication of trauma related research will be elements of success in the role.

Preferred evidence of past research experience and activity related to clinical trauma research or injury epidemiology.


  • Two years of experience in research activities relevant to the area of hire (may include doctoral thesis or other research conducted during a postgraduate program)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with scientific methods and software relevant to the area of hire
  • Documented original research publications in peer-reviewed, National Library of Medicine (NLM) indexed journals, including publications where the applicant is listed as first author.


  • Expertise in research areas currently generating external funding for center investigators
  • Demonstrated proficiency in securing extramural funding for research projects
  • Experience serving as a Principal Investigator and leading research teams
