Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Vassar College Counseling Service is seeking a Staff Therapist. The Counseling Service provides creative, collaborative clinical service in a small, residential, liberal arts college environment. The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, be committed to life-long learning towards multicultural competence, and skilled in consultation, brief therapy models, group therapy and in providing innovative, inclusive outreach programming. The Staff Therapist must be able both to work independently, and cooperatively as a member of a professional team.


  • Intake and clinical assessment;
  • Brief individual psychotherapy;
  • Group therapy;
  • Consultation with campus and community members;
  • Crisis intervention and triage including back up on call rotation to an off-site on call service;
  • Design/presentation of training programs for students/staff; and outreach programming.

This is an administrative position with a strong, primary emphasis on innovative service delivery. Some evening and weekend hours should be expected, especially involving crisis intervention and outreach activities.
This position is a full-time, 10 month position (August 15 - June 15) and is eligible for Vassar College administrator benefits, such as health insurance, retirement, and paid vacation time.

  • APA approved, PhD, PsyD, EdD in clinical or counseling psychology or clinical social worker LCSW or DSW.
  • Licensed or license-eligible status in New York (require NYS license within one year of start date). Supervision for licensure will be provided if needed.
  • Position requires experience assessing and intervening with a range of disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology.
  • Strong ability to work well in collaborative care teams.
  • Must be committed to diversity, equity and culturally informed practices that are relationally informed through work and lived experiences.
  • Brief therapy and group facilitation experience in a college/university counseling center is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: eating disorders, trauma informed care, multicultural concerns, and issues related to men and masculinity.
