General summary/purpose:

The Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is in search of a Research Assistant for the Maryland Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (MD-ADDM) Project, part of the CDC’s ADDM Network. The purpose of this project is to provide estimates of the number of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Data collection for this project entails reviewing confidential records for precise details at various health facilities and schools in Maryland.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Contact data sources to schedule appointments for data collection and travel to data sources throughout several counties in MD to perform data collection activities.
  • Review electronic and/or paper health and education records.
  • Screen children’s records and determine whether abstraction criteria are met.
  • Abstract data from school and health records, including but not limited to data from developmental, psychological, and cognitive evaluations.
  • Accurately enters data into an online database.
  • Adhere to study protocol and guidelines developed by the CDC.
  • Follow strict confidentiality and security guidelines.
  • Participate in conference calls with the funder and other project sites.
  • Assist with education and outreach activities.
  • Other responsibilities as required.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in health science, child psychology/development, special education, or another related field. Some related experience.
  • Must have reliable transportation for required travel throughout the study area.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience abstracting data from medical or school records.
  • Experience with electronic data collection and collecting sensitive data.
  • Knowledge of autism spectrum disorder or other related developmental disabilities.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High level of attention to detail is required.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgement while still adhering to project protocol.
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Self-starter.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
