General summary/purpose:

The Department of Thoracic Surgery is seeking a Research Assistant to work on laboratory-based research studies, specifically those involving animal models. The candidate will assist in procuring biological specimens from patients in both the OR and the clinic, processing and storing specimens, and well as animal-related surgery. They must have knowledge of laboratory practices, and prior animal experience is more competitive. This position will serve as support staff to other members of the lab working on the same research projects, but will be responsible for certain aspects of the project, such as animal care and maintenance. The candidate will be expected to follow all IRB regulations and guidelines, as well as all Hopkins policies. The research projects primarily involve lung and esophageal cancer, but also some non-cancer related cohorts. The work schedule may fluctuate depending on the needs of the project so the candidate must be flexible.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Procure biological specimens from the clinic and OR
  • Process, store, and log in study specimens
  • Assist project team members with animal care and research
  • Act as primary animal care contact for the lab, once trained
  • Work closely with Research Program Manager with updates on study progression
  • Implement and maintain data collection and analysis systems in support of research protocol; including the management of data, paper files, and electronic databases.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor's degree in related discipline. Some related experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least one year working in a research setting preferred
  • Animal-related research experience preferred
  • Post-graduate courses in medicine related discipline preferred.
  • Technical writing, generating figures and tables from data, and reading and summarizing research literature

  • Highly detailed-oriented with excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent work attitude and habits including reliability, flexibility, and the ability to think and work independently and as a team
  • Ability to work independently, exercise discretion and mature judgment, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
