General summary/purpose:
The Whiting School of Engineering employs server and workstation technologies to support academic, research, and administrative activities. This position will enable the school to use best practices and efficient maintenance strategies with regards to machines on the Linux platform. The position reports to the IT Manager of WSE IT with the primary customer being the Center for Language and Speech Processing, but will be a highly skilled resource available to all users and IT staff across WSE.Specific duties & responsibilities:
- Understand pfSense or similar firewall rulesets
- Act as backup website administrator when primary web administrator is unavailable
- Provide system administrative support for summer workshops using AWS or other cloud hosting providers
- Document systems and processes for customers and for IT staff.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
- Two years of college coursework.
- Five years of related experience required.
- Additional education can substitute for experience and additional experience may substitute for education.
Preferred qualifications:
- Relevant certifications in Linux technologies or IT security a plus In-depth knowledge of multiple Linux distributions preferred (primarily Debian and RedHat)
- Broad knowledge of networking preferred
- Some knowledge of shell scripting required
- Familiarity with server hardware preferred
- Familiarity with scientific clusters and HPC scheduling tools (GridEngine preferred)
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of multiple Linux distributions preferred (primarily Debian and RedHat)
- Broad knowledge of networking preferred
- Some knowledge of shell scripting required
- Familiarity with server hardware preferred
- Familiarity with scientific clusters and HPC scheduling tools (GridEngine preferred)
- Familiarity with client OSes (Mac, Windows) a plus
- Familiarity with website maintenance (e.g., WordPress) and security a plus
- Broad understanding of fundamental IT principles that result in maintainable, secure systems supporting a wide array of applications.
- Knowledge of cloud computing,with system administration for cloud services

- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, ability to support customers of all sorts (students to deans, non-technical to experts).
- Will take direction from departmental researchers on research direction, but will independently design technical solutions to service research requirements in consultation with JH IT standards and WSE IT peers.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
