The Assistant Director for Research and Laboratory Safety oversees research and laboratory safety administrative and operational activities for Environmental Health and Safety Services and provides professional expertise, guidance and safety services to laboratory faculty, staff and students. The Assistant Director for Research and Laboratory Safety serves as the University’s Institutional Biosafety Officer and Laser Safety Officer, assists in the management of the University’s Radiation Safety Program, and oversees the centralized chemical receiving area and comprehensive laboratory chemical inventory system.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, chemical engineering or other science-related discipline required. Master’s degree preferred.
5 years of experience in an academic or research environment and/or laboratory safety management experience in an organization with diverse research and development activities.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Experience working with a university-based population preferred.
Successful candidate is expected to establish their principal residence in the Central New York area within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University.

Job Specific Qualifications

Knowledge of research laboratory operations, including understanding of chemical, biological, radiological, physical processes/procedures commonly used in research.
Demonstrated understanding of biological and radiological hazards/related regulations and safety practices.
Familiarity with a range of health and safety programs, regulations and topics impacting a large research university.
Strong communication/presentation skills, including the ability to communicate risks effectively, prepare professional-quality presentations, speak clearly/engagingly about complex issues before small and large groups.
Strong written communication skills, analytical skills, attention to detail with experience in developing reports, and evaluating/interpreting analytical data.
Effective use of MS Office applications and other applications.
Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills with proven success in the evaluation and improvement of office efficiencies such as advancing the abilities of those supervised.
Ability to work autonomously in a highly matrixed, decentralized, and complex work environment.
A valid NYS driver’s license, driving record for University requirements
Must be medically fit/able to wear respiratory protection.
Current HAZWOPPER certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Leads, manages administrative and operational activities of EHSS¿s laboratory safety group.
Develops, implements, maintains, oversees programs/initiatives related to research and laboratory safety, including chemical safety, biosafety, radiation safety, laser safety, and controlled substances.
Reviews research activities, procedures, facilities and equipment to assess hazards and compliance requirements and offers guidance and recommendations to mitigate hazards, prevent incidents and address compliance obligations.
Advises/communicates to the University academic community. Responds to their inquiries regarding laboratory research, health and safety requirements, policies, guidance, best management practices.
Aids University in maintaining compliance/adherence with federal, state, local laws; rules and regulations as they relate to laboratory/research safety.
Serves as the University’s Biosafety Officer and Laser Safety Officer, participates in University Committees including the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
Participates in chemical, biological or environmental incident investigations and spill response actions, including on-call 24-hour emergency response or notification.

Leads the University’s new centralized chemical receiving area and staff.
Oversees the collection and maintenance of the University’s comprehensive inventory of laboratory chemicals and the chemical tracking software system.
Reviews chemicals received, offers chemical safety assistance, guidance and support to chemical users and develops technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance chemical safety and compliance.

Supervises four staff, identifies staff priorities, and assigns specific duties and tasks to accomplish these priorities.
Meets regularly with direct report staff to discuss opportunities, challenges and solutions and work progress.
Engages in the performance partnership process for direct report staff.
Makes budgetary and purchase recommendations to EHSS Director and assists establishing EHSS goals and priorities.

Supports the Director of EHSS in the general administration and operational activities of the Department.
Participates in special departmental projects and leadership support activities.
Offers support and expertise in additional EHSS areas including occupational health and safety and public health.
Other duties as assigned.
