Responsible for the administrative management of the Economics Department in the Maxwell School, including 2 administrative staff, 32 full-time and 3 part-time faculty, 41 PhD students, and master’s students, in a department that has 600+ majors and taught almost 2,900 undergraduate students last year. Administration and management of an operating budget including payroll; a faculty research budget. a seminar budget, and several endowed funds.
Responsible for managing and supporting most aspects of faculty appointments for the Economics Department. Serve as liaison for the Economic department to other academic and non-academic units on campus and as the Economics Department’s compliance director making sure that faculty and staff comply with the University’s FERPA, travel, purchasing, administrative and financial, and other policies.

Qualifications

Minimum of a four-year degree or equivalent experience, plus six to seven years of office experience.

Job Specific Qualifications

Position requires excellent communications skills, both orally and written; must be organized and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; proficiency in various social media applications; proficiency in data analysis, knowledge of standard safeguards for use of sensitive employee and budget data; proficiency in MS-Office suite; individual should have experience in managing an office and personnel. Knowledge of a wide range of University policies and FERPA rules.

Responsibilities

Administration, management, resource allocation and authorized signer on all departmental operating, payroll, faculty research, endowment, and restricted gift fund budgets. Track spending and budget balances to ensure a balanced budget at year-end.

Coordinate, manage and support all aspects of departmental faculty appointments from recruiting, hiring, creating and distributing appointment letters, campus transition, promotion, and tenure, through phased retirement. Coordinate and organize the annual faculty teaching and research evaluation process and annual compensation increment process.

Supervise, hire, train and manage 2 Economics department staff, including conducting performance reviews in cooperation with the department chair on an annual basis. Manage HR issues on an as-needed basis.

In collaboration with the Director of Graduate Studies, manage the funding support for the department’s 41 PhD students, including determining the allocation of funds for the academic year and summer funding.

Serve as the Economics department’s compliance director for FERPA, IRB, auditing, risk management, travel policy and other University policies.
