This position will report to the Deputy Athletic Director and be responsible for the strategic management and oversight of the Athletics’ employment lifecycle. As the Assistant Athletics Director, Strategic Management you will consult with various leaders across the Athletics’ organization to create and implement programs that will enhance the culture and employee development.

What you’ll do:
  • Maintaining communications with athletic compliance office regarding legislation and interpretation of rules and regulations related to applicable personnel matters.
  • Assisting Athletics Department Administration with the compilation and submission of selected Big 12 and NCAA reporting information surrounding personnel.
  • Serving as a member of the athletics leadership council and works in cooperation with members of the leadership council to analyze and prioritize challenges facing the unit; partners with WVU’s Talent and Culture to develop innovative solutions to support the unit’s strategies.
  • Developing and implementing programs that enhance department culture and employee engagement, including department events, professional development series, etc. Responsible for the publication and dissemination of the employee manual.
  • Managing the execution of key processes and transactions related to all aspects of employment under and serving as advisory to the Athletics senior staff team for personnel-related matters in consultation with WVU’s HR partner.
  • Overseeing all aspects of the Athletics’ employment cycle for full-time staff and provide second level oversight for a high volume of temporary staff, student workers and volunteers in compliance with University, NCAA and Big 12 Conference regulations. This position coordinates with Talent and Culture on all compensation, payroll, benefits, recruiting and workplace inquiries.
  • Manage the hiring processes including coordinating the position management process; ‎working with the Talent Strategy team to facilitate posting and recruitment of positions through WVU’s HR ‎and other national employment advertising venues; leading search committees, conducting interviews and participating in job offer processes.
  • Coordinating the onboarding of all new staff through University and departmental orientation programs.
  • Serve as employee relations consultant for Athletics and serve ‎as department liaison and Athletics representative to central Human Resource Services.‎ Consult with supervisors on trends, needs, and strengths of their areas to identify employee skills, ‎training, and behavioral expectations required to develop and retain exceptional staff.
  • ‎Facilitate the resolution of workplace conflicts through all forms of alternative dispute resolution among supervisors and employees. Recommend appropriate proactive measures to ‎directors, supervisors and employees. Advise department on alternative dispute resolution proceedings. Serve as the point of contact for Athletics surrounding employee investigations.
  • Serve as liaison to WVU’s Talent and Culture to administer the annual Performance Review process to ensure proper performance expectation and evaluation ‎processes are conducted.
  • Provide direction to staff on issues related to payroll, compensation, recruiting, benefits and other workplace inquiries in consultation with WVU’s HR Partner and Deputy Athletics Director/COO. Initiates processes as needed
  • Serve as the primary liaison to WVU’s Medical Management. Assists with the completion of various employment paperwork such as workers compensation, FMLA, etc.
  • Manages the department’s confidential employment files which includes employment agreements, employment history/transfer/promotion documents, disciplinary correspondence, etc. Ensure confidentiality of records. As well as manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.
  • Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program.
  • Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently
  • Manage professional and personal time to be handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work and on-call availability.


Qualifications :

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience involving:
    • Human Resources or Business administration,
    • Experience in higher education


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in related field
  • Professional in Human Resources Certification (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources Certification (SPHR) preferred
  • (3) years of experience in collegiate athletics
    • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics
    • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations with the ability to interpret, apply, enforce and explain such policies and rules

  • Demonstrated knowledge of record keeping and adherence to schedule; Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality standards, work extended hours including nights and weekends
  • Ability to stay abreast of information impacting the affected area
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate groups and individuals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effected areas of involvement
  • Ability to make administrative / procedural decisions and judgments
