Position Function

The Content Strategist and Executive Writer is a creative idea-generator, writer, problem solver, and project manager of high-level communications, including emails, internal newsletters, news releases, magazine articles, and video scripts, on behalf of the President, Provost, Deans, and other university executives. Responsible for editing University communications, including publications, news releases, emails, and web content to ensure the brand story through tone, voice, accuracy, consistency, and quality. This position works directly under the Magazine Editor, participating in all stages of the publication processes, and also works closely with all members of Marketing and Communications.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in English, Public Relations, Communications or other related field from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

At least five years of writing for a corporation, agency or college/university.

Minimum Other

Excellent creative writing skills, demonstrated skill in writing compelling ad copy, demonstrated editing skills, proven experience working in a fast paced environment, detail-oriented.

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Preferred Experience

Experience working in Higher Education, creative services or agency setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of media relations, pitching stories, content development and copy editing. Project management experience: managing multiple projects simultaneously; working effectively and efficiently with individuals and teams within a diverse environment; and using tools such as WorkFront. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic content, communication and marketing principles. Experience using content curation skills, transforming content across platforms to meet different audience needs; ability to visualize the best way to present content.

Preferred Other

Experience researching and collecting information, including interviewing skills, web research skills, and other intelligence gathering techniques. Experience using analytical skills in transforming business insights into strategic planning. Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills. Experience using client relationship skills, being self-directed and in taking initiatives to completion. Experience using creative and critical thinking skills, goal setting and attention to detail. Demonstrated knowledge of web content best practices. Experience using Microsoft office.

Compellingly communicate our college’s brand story and shape and implement the college’s content strategies across multiple mediums.

Plan, write and produce high-impact communications for faculty, staff and the general public, including optimized content for websites, email campaigns, social media and media relations. Oversee deliverables across the project life cycle.

Execute high-level writing on behalf of university executives and project manage communications, including but not limited to emails, news releases, the University’s internal enewsletter and video scripts.

Serve as Assistant Editor of the University’s Alumni Magazine. Collaborate with the editor of the Alumni Magazine researching, developing, article planning, etc. Coordinate with team members ensuring all deadlines are met.

Support the communication team’s media relations work, including, but not limited to, assisting when assigned with the coordination of interviews, developing and delivering media reports, ensuring the University meets established media placement goals, and proactively pitching story ideas that tell the University’s story digitally and highlight the University’s best experts and researchers.

Create content for the Ball State web site, ensure timeliness of all information, and coordinate content updates to expand the college’s brand and reach. Utilize SEO and analytics to drive page views, conversions, and yield.

Build relationships with and conduct regular interviews with faculty, alumni, key stakeholders, project leads/managers, and team members in order to develop stories for publication and market content. Develop innovative methods to share this content through news stories, social media or ideas yet to be created.
