Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Technician will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and work closely members of the laboratory as instructed by the PI in providing support in conducting experiments for intra and extramurally funded research projects. These projects will require the ability to work with bacteria, animal models (mouse and rat) and ticks. The technician may also assist as needed with maintaining inventories of reagents and supplies, cultivation of diverse bacteria, conducting immunological analyses (immunoblots, ELISAs, antibody titer determination), cloning, PCR, protein production and purification using FPLC and HPLC, animal handling and other general procedures required to maintain the lab. Candidates that possess high level laboratory skills, may at the PIs discretion conduct some independent research.

Minimum Hiring Standards

The minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in the biosciences. However, priority will be given to candidates with a master’s degree in microbiology or immunology or to candidates with demonstrated laboratory experience beyond that generally obtained through standard classroom-based laboratory work. A competitive candidate will preferably have experience with some of the following procedures or tasks: PCR, cloning, protein production, protein purification, high performance liquid chromatography, ELISA assays, immunoblotting, bacterial cultivation, animal handling (mice and rats), animal immunization, blood collection and dissection. Ability to work in a team based dynamic environment is required. The applicant must be able to multi-task and work with others in a cooperative and interactive manner and must be able to meticulously follow established protocols. Ability to work in a diverse environment required.

Preferred Hiring Standards

MS degree with previous experience with laboratory techniques including PCR, cloning, protein production, protein purification, high performance liquid chromatography, ELISA assays, immunoblotting, bacterial cultivation, animal handling (mice and rats), animal immunization, blood collection and dissection. A candidate that has not completed a master’s degree will only be considered if they have hands on experience working in a laboratory either post-degree or through internships as a student. Basic animal handling will be an essential part of the job.
