Professor/Associate Professor in Urban Studies/Urban Planning



Applications are invited for appointment as Professor on tenure terms or Tenure-Track Associate Professor in Urban Studies/Urban Planning in the Department of Urban Planning and Design (Ref. 504254), to commence on September 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate at Professor level may be considered for direct tenure. Appointment as Associate Professor will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.

HKU’s Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) is an internationally leading planning school with excellence in teaching and research in urban studies, urban planning and urban science. Its vision is to offer leadership in intellectual and methodological developments in the field, as well as making high-level impact on urban planning, management and policy developments in Hong Kong, mainland China, the Belt and Road Region and further afield. DUPAD has a 40-year history of blending urban science, planning, design and policy analytics and has one of the strongest groups of urban data scientists anywhere in the world. It is also active in interdisciplinary research, with strong links with geography, public health, real-estate and urban economics, transport, architecture, social science and environmental science groups in HKU and other universities.

Entering its 40thAnniversary, the Department is one of the most well established and globally respected urban research centres in the Asia-Pacific region. The Department offers a range of taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and M.Phil./Ph.D research programmes in urban studies, urban planning, urban design, urban analytics, housing management, transport, environment and healthy cities. The Department seeks an outstanding scholar with proven international leadership in research, teaching and knowledge exchange in the field of urban studies, urban planning and development.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in relevant fields, and a good general background in urban scholarship as well as their research specialisms. They should have a distinguished and sustained record of high-quality impactful research publications and of winning competitive grants, versatile academic ability and personality, and proven managerial and leadership skills. They should also have intellectual and practical vision, an ability to inspire strong connections with industry, and a natural skill in mentoring younger academics. A track record of research in the Asia-Pacific region will be an advantage but is not essential. Applicants with less experience may be considered for appointment as Associate Professor.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
