Job Overview
As a senior member of the leadership team reporting directly to the Chief Innovation Officer, this role requires developing and advancing strategic commercialization objectives that accelerate growth in the Cincinnati Innovation District. Role is responsible for developing strategy, execution, management and leading three organizational units aligned with accelerating innovation into the marketplace: Technology Transfer, Venture Lab Startup Accelerator, and the UC MakerSpace. Develop and manage a globally competitive network of partnerships that bring the world’s premier innovation and financial (venture and private equity) resources into the Cincinnati Innovation District.

Essential Functions

  • Enhance the vibrancy and grow the entrepreneurial, commercialization and innovation ecosystem defined by talent, technology, and resources within the CID. Develop business partnerships leveraging the talent (faculty, talent, staff, alumni, external parties), intellectual property, university, and CID resources to create quantifiable value.
  • Support intellectual property and startup pipeline from UC, but also our larger regional pipeline spanning multiple universities, research institutes, and cities in proximity to the greater-Cincinnati region.
  • Work with other senior leaders to strategically position this ‘ecosystem’ as a destination location for talent and investment on a national and global basis.
  • Responsible for the establishment and delivery of quarterly and annual goals and management of the team t asked with accomplishing them.
  • Ensure that new ventures, be they licensable technologies or startups, have access to internal and external resources by developing partnerships needed to commercialize, compete, and win on a global stage.
  • Serve as an influencer, and advisor to the Chief Innovation Officer, on broader policies both regionally and in the state.
  • Ensure that ease of access to university intellectual property is a compelling reason for organizations to do business with the University of Cincinnati and for businesses to join, or launch in, the CID.
  • Build a density of startups that attracts additional entrepreneurial talent, capital, and resources to the CID.
  • Strategically build and manage relationships at multiple leadership levels within the UC and our other regional partners.
  • Ensure that clients receive world-class white-glove service. Ensure world-class and friction free acceleration of innovation commercialization in the CID.
  • Instill a competitive right-to-win attitude that is pervasive throughout the CID.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action approve time off, etc.).

Required Education
Bachelor's degree.

Required Experience

  • Seven (7) years of related experience.
  • Three (3) years of supervision.
  • A proven track record of delivering results, developing commercial partnerships and business and negotiation skills.
  • Strong senior level management, strategy, and execution skills.
  • Executive-level business management experience.
  • Entrepreneurial and ‘can do’ mindset to develop and lead a great organization in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong financial management experience.
  • Thrive in a corporate culture that expects excellence and innovation.
  • Solution-oriented and makes sound decisions quickly, given tight timeframes.
  • Excellent time/effort prioritization skills in an environment where numerous new opportunities will constantly arise.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Advanced degrees, including an MBA.
  • Experience working with institutional level venture capital and private equity.
  • Experience managing and negotiating equity positions and IP commercialization terms.
  • Experience working with or within a university.
