Job Summary

This position is responsible for the creation, implementation, management, assessment, and marketing of ASC supplemental academic programs, including the Peer-Assisted Learning (PALs) program, which offers strategic academic support for historically-difficult courses and general education courses, and the instruction of UNIV 102 – Strategies for College Success. The ASC Program Manager has responsibility for all PALs programming, provides oversight and direction of group tutoring programs, and additionally makes decisions for the day-to-day operations of PALs, the supervision and training of PALs tutors, and the structure of the support offered. The ASC Program Manager collaborates extensively with faculty and other campus partners to engage students in usage of ASC services.  All employees are expected to support CWU’s commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

 

Job Duties

Administration:

  • Recruit, train, and oversee Peer Tutors for all PALs/group tutoring
  • Develop and teach UNIV 102 Strategies for College Success and supplemental instruction curriculum that aligns with CRLA certification requirements
  • Create content for and lead weekly professional development meetings for tutors
  • Develop instructional materials and resources as needed
  • Collaborate with ASC administrative team to develop and update tutoring manuals, policies, and procedures
  • Communicate with faculty across all campuses and online to determine appropriate academic support measures and coordinate with other ASC staff to support student success
  • Implement and regularly assess the policies and procedures for PALs that enable the program to function effectively and consistently across multiple disciplines and across general education
  • Support faculty in understanding, supporting, and following the requirements of PALs policies to align with best practices
  • Lead PALs programs according to governing principles of the Council for the Advancement of Students (CAS), College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), and National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA)
  • Represent the ASC in extensive collaboration with academic units to develop supplemental instruction for high-need gateway courses
  • Develop curriculum centered around CRLA requirements, metacognitive revision strategies, and current learning theories. Additionally, develop ongoing onboarding materials, student binders, and handouts to use for PALs and ASC student employees
  • Consult with the ASC staff and students in strategizing a forward vision for PALs programming

 

Assessment:

  • Make programmatic decisions based on assessments of student and faculty involvement, success rates, GPA comparisons, and funding. Determine appropriate support structures based on faculty and student need, and data required by governing bodies.
  • Run queries on course success rates to inform decision making regarding courses with high need for support.
  • Oversee tracking of attendance, ensuring that appropriate recordkeeping and data management is maintained.
  • Develop and provide reports to track quality, participation, and results of courses supported by group tutoring.
  • Engage in research and evidence-based assessment; use reports and metrics to inform decision making for PALs programming.
  • Engage PALs leaders in assessment, program building, and marketing.
  • Schedule all PALs sessions and manage all daily operations related to supplemental instruction/group tutoring.
  • Monitor PALs engagement in courses and take responsibility for creating high quality programming.

 

Marketing and Outreach:

  • Manage regular communications, marketing strategies, and materials about PALs and UNIV 102.
  • Work with ASC Staff to ensure website has up-to-date information regarding all PALs offerings.
  • Work directly with advisors and faculty to support students in high-need and general education classes.

 

Supervisor Duties:

  • Actively engage in ongoing recruitment and hiring of a diverse workforce of 30-35 student employees
  • Oversee PALs leader observations and performance evaluations; provide ongoing and timely feedback to PALs leaders about performance.
  • Ensure student employees have necessary resources
  • Oversee and direct the work of student employees; serve as mentor, coach, and leader, resolve complaints or issues in a timely manner; and, in consultation with the ASC Director; take corrective action in a timely manner
  • Promote professional development opportunities
  • Communicate information to student staff on an ongoing basis to promote inclusion in and engagement with the ASC
  • Recognize and reward student employees for good performance
  • Schedule student employee work hours/shifts; monitor hours worked; approve payable time and absence requests
  • Value and encourage diverse perspectives, creativity, and teamwork
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
  • At least one year of experience working with peer education, mentoring, advising, or coaching programs
  • Experience teaching college success courses
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office programs and student database management systems
  • Experience conducting assessment and using data to inform decision making
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • College-level tutoring and/or teaching experience
  • College-level coursework in a STEM field
  • Supervisory experience, particularly experience supervising student employees
  • Experience creating and providing training opportunities
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Knowledge of Supplemental Instruction, tutoring best practices and theory, and CRLA certification requirements
  • Demonstrated participation in programs designed to promote inclusion
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students through various activities.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: Dependent upon qualifications and experience

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch)

 

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions.  It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records.  Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
