The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine is seeking aChief Nurse Anesthetistwho is responsible for the overall management, planning, direction, supervision, and coordination of the Division of Nurse Anesthesia. This involves clinical affairs; workforce recruitment, development, evaluation, and retention; student education; research/quality initiatives; and budget management. This individual provides clinical services as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) as 60% of their effort.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Keeps Director and Associate Administrator of ACCM updated on divisional affairs through regular meetings and communications. Works collaboratively with both leaders on strategic planning and items that require Director approval.
  • Participates in collaboration with CRNA Administrative Manager, HR Manager, and other leaders and members of the department to address divisional needs as pertaining to the CRNA Division.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance with University policies and procedures, as well as relevant Hospital regulatory or other policies/requirements. Represents CRNAs whenever indicated or requested by the University or Hospital.
  • Attends Clinical Staffing, Quality, Safety & Service, and other departmental and divisional meetings as CRNA representative.
  • Conducts quarterly CRNA Divisional meetings to exchange departmental information necessary for CRNA clinical practice, awareness, and wellness. Coordinates closely with the School of Nursing leadership team and SRNA Clinical Coordinator to maintain teaching and clinical site excellence. Oversees mentoring, supervising, orienting, and scheduling of student anesthetists.
  • Meets as necessary with other divisional chiefs or faculty to facilitate communication and engagement in problem solving to actively address and resolve items.
  • Intervenes to facilitate any conflict resolution involving individual CRNAs/SRNAs and or multiple CRNAs/SRNAs.
  • Performs counseling and disciplinary functions as necessary in accordance with JHU established policies and procedures. Takes appropriate disciplinary action when necessary and follows up as needed. Informs management of actions taken and discusses action plans when appropriate prior to implementation (i.e. suspension or discharge).
  • Reviews and approves all divisional policies to include all vacation, sick time, leave of absence, FMLA leave, etc.
  • Establishes appropriate staff placement based on skill levels, efficiency, and productivity to maximize utilization of human resources.
  • Works with CRNA Administrative Manager, HR Manager, Credentialing representatives, and HR representative to facilitate processing of new hires to include credentialing and recredentialing of existing staff.

INTRADEPARTMENTAL RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Chief Nurse Anesthetist works with other department leaders to establish and maintain the highest possible standard of clinical practice and staffing. She/he collaboratively defines metrics of clinical competency of the CRNAs with department clinical leadership. The individual participates in person-power workgroup meetings to address department staffing needs that pertain to the CRNA Division.
  • Works alongside JHH ACCM, Bayview ACCM, and Howard County ACCM CRNA Leads to collaborate in shared missions.
  • Nurtures the collaborative practice model to ensure excellence in patient care.
  • Attends divisional and/or faculty meetings when necessary to engage in discussions and/or present CRNA issues.
  • Participates in clinical initiatives/reorganizations (i.e. performance improvement; quality, safety and service initiatives).
  • Participates in the integration of the collaborative practice model throughout SRNA education.

STAFF PLANNING AND RECRUITMENT

The Chief Nurse Anesthetist collaborates with ACCM Human Resources and Administration to formulate recruitment plans for the CRNA Division. Additional responsibilities include:

    Attending national/regional meetings and career days and hosting recruitment events for staff recruitment. Facilitating recruitment and hiring (with assistance from CRNA Division Manager). Interviewing and showcasing the Anesthesiology and Critical Care Department and the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Coordinating the orientation of new CRNAs to ACCM department and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Ensuring that orientation materials are current and up to date. Assigning a CRNA mentor to new staff to expedite departmental orientations and integration. Orchestrating Critical Care Nurses and RN inquiries into Nurse Anesthesia profession to include referrals to the School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND ORIENTATION RESPONSIBILITIES

This individual will collaborate with divisional members to establish their developmental plans. These plans identify individual goals and learning needs, and establish methods for implementing said goals. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Acclimates new CRNAs to ACCM department and JHU institutions.
  • Keeps orientation material current.
  • Assigns CRNA mentor to new staff to expedite departmental integration and facilitate a welcoming response.
  • Timely completion of and compliance with initial, follow up and annual CRNA performance evaluations for development and merit increases to coincide with the annual requirements established by the University.
  • Proactively establishing CRNA interest and engagement in meeting performance requirements and encourages full participation.
  • Providing mentorship and professional support for all members of the division.
  • Establishing total participation and education with regard to new programs and initiatives.
  • Continuing development of Divisional model with increasing staff participation and creation of a formal education.

PATIENT SAFETY

The Chief Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for monitoring and investigating trends in event reports involving CRNAs to cultivate a culture of patient safety and encourage CRNAs to be involved in improving care processes and identifying opportunities for improvement. This individual oversees Quality Improvement activities of the CRNA group.


CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This individual performs the duties, responsibilities, and expectations of a staff CRNA described in the job description of same. Expectation is to work in the clinical CRNA role 2-3 shifts per work week or as needed.

Physical Requirements: The Chief Nurse Anesthetist must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time. She/he must be able to move throughout the hospital as needed for patient care, and must be able to wear a lead apron weighing up to 15.5 lbs. She/he must have the ability to push and pull objects weighing 50 lbs. or more, as well as the ability move or transport objects weighing 50 lbs. or less (e.g. transport monitors from ICU to OR, medical equipment from workroom to OR). This individual must have the ability to transfer patients between beds and stretchers, and the ability to adjust and raise the head of a hospital bed.

BACKGROUND AND EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION

    The Chief Nurse Anesthetist must complete the requirements for a degree or diploma from an education program in nurse anesthesia approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. If the nurse anesthesia program was completed after January 1, 2008, then the program must be at a master’s degree or higher. A minimum of a Master’s degree is required Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred. The individual must be certified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or from another certifying body approved by the Board, or be in the process of acquiring such certification. Current Maryland State RN and CRNA licensure required. Current CPR (BLS & ACLS) certification required. This individual must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date. Two years’ clinical experience as a CRNA and one year of supervisory/leadership experience is required. Experience in an academic medical center is preferred.
