Job Description

Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business is hiring a director of communications and marketing to help attract new students, engage with public and private partners, promote diversity and inclusion and inspire philanthropic support.

The director will lead and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing program to increase the visibility and brand awareness of the college and develop, execute, measure, and refine campaigns that align with the strategic goals of the college and the university.

The director must work collaboratively across the college to manage branding, marketing, design, digital, editorial, messaging and public relations efforts. This individual must feel confident and comfortable working across a matrix organizational structure -- with internal and external stakeholders -- often taking the lead and sometimes serving in a supportive role with other communications personnel.

The director must have a strong record of progressive experience in communications, including evidence of strong writing and editing, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and marketing skills; proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms and web content planning; an understanding of graphic design and branding principles; and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.

The director reports jointly to the senior director for university relations and media outreach and the assistant dean for advancement in Pamplin.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience or master’s degree.

Ability to define goals and objectives, identify target audiences, and develop and implement strategic plans to accomplish and measure progress towards communications goals.

Demonstrated experience in communications or marketing.

Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and evaluate a comprehensive communications program.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing or supervising a team

Experience in a higher education, independent school, or non-profit environment.

Experience coaching senior leaders on messaging, as well as directly, addressing the public through audio, video, and the written word.

Experience representing and incorporating diverse constituencies and perspectives in communications.

Strong skills using technology in the workplace; familiarity with content management systems, web platforms, social media competencies.

Demonstrated experience leading people, either as a supervisor, a colleague collaborating with others, or both.

Experience working with alumni engagement initiatives.

Experience working with a variety of creative communications, data analytics, e-mail management, and web content management software platforms.
