Summary/Objective

The Associate Head Coach, Wrestling, assists the Head Coach Wrestling with daily office and floor operations, including making appropriate and necessary related decisions. Assists the Head Coach in maintaining the annual budget, which includes team travel, recruiting, office expenses, equipment, and uniforms. Oversees approximately 20+ student-athletes and 9.9 scholarships. The Associate Head Coach assumes the responsibility of leading and conducting team activities, practices and meets, if the Head Coach is not present. This position works under general supervision.

Essential Functions
  1. In collaboration with the Head Wrestling Coach, provides general oversight and direction for day-to-day plans, goals, and activities of the Wrestling program. Assists the Head Coach by providing guidance on departmental or University policies and coaching philosophy, and participating in coaching decisions. Assists the Head Coach and Athletic Director in scheduling of competition by appropriate timelines to allow other administrative needs to be met (events management, athletic trainers, officials, travel, lodging, meals, etc.). Leads and conducts all team activities, practices and meets if the Head Coach is not present.
  2. Teaches wrestling skills and knowledge. Plans wrestling systems. Conducts individual in-season and out-of season practice sessions, individual skill development, and competitions and post and pre-season conditioning. Strives to help students-athletes obtain the best skill and fitness level possible. Watches tape and prepares the coaching staff as well as the team to compete against their opponents, includes on-mat coaching to teach players about their opponents.
  3. Assists the Head Coach in recruiting and hiring qualified applicants; making coaching assignments based upon qualifications; encouraging professional development; and evaluating performance.
  4. Works with the Head Coach in recruiting student-athletes, including: working closely with AU Admissions on the recruitment of all prospective student athletes; targeting recruiting efforts to result in effective signings of student-athletes; facilitating the provision of all information necessary to determine prospective student-athlete eligibility; and reaching minimum roster goals as defined by the Athletic Department and University.
  5. Assesses and manages student-athlete issues, evaluating student-athletes on the mat and in the classroom in order to recruit quality student-athletes to AU.
  6. Maintains knowledge of NCAA rules to ensure that the team complies fully with NCAA and AU regulations. In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Compliance, prepares and manages all compliance paperwork related to official visits, unofficial visits, evaluations, contracts and number of opportunities the staff has used.
