Van Andel Institute (VAI) is a nonprofit biomedical research and science education institute located in the heart of Grand Rapids, MI’s vibrant Medical Mile.  VAI Graduate School is currently hiring for a Director of Assessment and Professional Development.  VAI Graduate School (VAIGS) develops future leaders in biomedical research through an intense, problem-focused Ph.D. degree in molecular and cell biology. By combining rigorous, inquiry-based coursework with extensive experience in laboratories led by the Institute’s expert faculty, VAIGS prepares students for productive careers in biomedical research and beyond. VAIGS thrives within the state-of-the-art facilities of VAI with access to extensive core technology support and the resources of collaborators in Grand Rapids, Michigan and around the country.


Position Summary:

The Director, reporting to the Dean of VAIGS, will be responsible for assessment and evaluation of VAIGS programs and courses. The Director will develop and implement processes that enable VAIGS to measure the impact of its work; create and apply procedures for data collection and analysis; and establish mechanisms and formats for internal and external reporting. The Director will guide faculty and staff in assessment and evaluation practices. The director will oversee periodic program review and accreditation initiatives. The Director will create and direct professional development opportunities for faculty, graduate students and student interns.



  • Develop and implement evaluation and assessment processes for existing and new VAIGS courses and programs, including instruments and procedures for feedback to students, course evaluations, surveys, interviews, observations, and other data collection; oversee data management and reporting of all projects.
  • Develop and direct workshops and training for VAIGS faculty on classroom assessment techniques, evaluation of teaching effectiveness, educational principles, pedagogy, and mentoring.
  • Design and direct periodic program review processes; collect, analyze, and present relevant data; lead or guide collaborative teams on aspects of program review; compile and edit program review reports.
  • Support Graduate School staff in the design, implementation, and analysis of systems to meet program review and evaluation requirements for accreditation and serve as Accreditation Liaison Officer.
  • With other staff, develop and implement professional development courses, workshops, and activities for graduate students and undergraduate interns.
  • Develop and sustain opportunities for graduate student internships in teaching or research settings, and support and monitor activities.
  • Serve as staff liaison for undergraduate internships, guest students, and related programming.
  • Support the Dean in developing and implementing the VAIGS strategic plan and serve as project manager for specific initiatives.
  • Compile and analyze data in preparation for reporting; prepare reports for specified projects; and present VAIGS program outcomes in appropriate conferences, seminars or publications.
  • Prepare and submit protocols for education-related human subjects research to Institutional Review Board.
  • Assist staff in preparing funding proposals (grants, contracts, philanthropy) for support of VAIGS programs.
  • Directly supervise staff related to assessment and development programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • PhD in a basic / natural science discipline and/or in science education or educational psychology; master’s degree may suffice for candidates with exceptional experience.
  • Teaching and/or assessment experience in higher education, preferably at the graduate level.
  • Strong focus on science education assessment and evaluation methods.
  • At least five years of professional experience in a research or evaluation work environment; institutional effectiveness or institutional research experience preferred.
  • Ability to design and conduct qualitative/quantitative evaluation studies, develop data collection instruments, and conduct appropriate analyses.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of word processing, spread sheet, data analysis, project management and presentation software.
  • Strong analytical reasoning skills, oral and written communication skills, and project management skills.
