Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is hiring an Armed Security Officer on 3rd Shift to join the Safety team. Embry-Riddle's Prescott Campus is respected worldwide for cutting-edge instruction and training for tomorrow’s aviation, aerospace, security and intelligence leaders. Prescott is a mile-high city and its climate reflects seasonable weather excellent for flying. Daytime averages are 80°F in the summer and 45°F in the winter. At 5,000 ft. above sea level, it boasts a mild climate, clean air, pristine wilderness areas, and nearby national forests. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

Job Summary:

As an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Security Officer your primary task is to provide a safe and secure campus for the students (residential and non-residential), faculty, staff, contractors, and guests. You are also tasked with protecting Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s assets, facilities, property, business interests, and reputation. These goals will be accomplished by taking a service-oriented, community-building educational approach. Our objectives include deterrence, detection, timely response, effective action, and accurate reporting. All members of the Prescott Campus Safety and Security Department are expected to project a professional appearance and demeanor in all their interactions with the campus community and the public. As an armed officer you are also expected to respond to the scene of life threatening violence and control or contain the threat until public law enforcement personnel arrive.

Job Duties:

Upon successful completion of the armed officer selection, screening, training and certification process:

Abide by the University “Use of Force” policies and procedures. Wear and properly utilize issued sidearm, retention holster, body armor, OC agent, or restraints whenever on duty in uniform. Use of the handgun and hard armor whenever practical as you respond to reports of brandishing of deadly weapons or life threatening violence. Successfully complete specified ongoing training.

Community Crime Prevention and safety activities including, but not limited to: General campus patrol duties, investigating incidents, performing building checks, surveillance, and application of the traffic and parking regulations. Apply university administrative policies and procedures.

Respond to and mitigate emergencies including, but not limited to: Fires, medical emergencies, criminal incidents, misconduct issues, and facilities problems.

Housing support activities including, but not limited to: Foot patrol of each residence hall every shift, inspection of parking lots and grounds; conducting educational programs, and responding to calls for service from students and housing staff.

Technical support for fire, life, safety, and security systems including, but not limited to: Notifier/ONYX Works, Prowatch, RAVE, ARMS, department web pages, Eagle Card administration, access control programming and downloads, inspection and testing of code blue phones, courtesy phones, elevators emergency functions, evacuation chairs, AED maintenance, fire extinguishers.

Campus service calls including, but not limited to: Placing signage for events, unlocking/locking doors, monitoring and staffing special events, and disabled vehicle jumpstarts. Other duties as assigned.

Inspect for and report any safety hazards including, but not limited to: fire hazards, trip hazards, view obstructions, road obstructions, unsafe work practices, unsafe lighting.

Departmental administrative tasks including, but not limited to: preparing reports and briefing shift relief. Attend training sessions and reviewing logs, memos, and the policy and procedures manual. Actively participate in departmental staff meetings.

Team support duties including, but not limited to: Staffing the dispatch desk, maintain radio dispatch/log, administrative/desk tasks, answering the phone, and serving walk-in clients. Expertise on the following systems and processes required: ONYX Works, ARMS, T2, Prowatch, MaxPro, RAVE, Onnity, Key control, Radios, Landlines, Smartphones, SchedulER and Access lists.

Qualifications

High school (or GED) level ability in spelling, grammar, basic composition, and math.

AZ Concealed Weapons Permit or DPS armed guard card (current or within 90 days of employment).

Valid Arizona Driver license, “D” license from Arizona Department of Transportation. Must meet the University’s standards for approved drivers.

Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):

a. More than 3 moving violations and/or accidents in 3 years

b. More than 2 moving violations and/or accidents in any 1 year

Required skills, knowledge, abilities:

  • Must have relevant prior armed (law enforcement, military, corrections), experience in the last 10 yrs. and separated in good standing

  • Must have good physical ability, aptitude and community policing skills

  • Candidate must pass extensive background investigation including check for criminal history and DMV

  • Psychological Screening

  • Must be able to qualify and maintain certification and proficiency with department issued firearm and all a defensive weapons and

  • equipment

  • Willing to take a life in defense of yourself or another

  • Be an employee in good standing with the University

  • Meets or exceeds performance evaluation

  • Not currently on a PIP, if currently employed with the University



Ability to :

  • Promote good community relations and build community confidence in the campus security department.

  • Ability and willingness to work any shift covering all days of the week and all hours of the day including weekends and holidays.

  • Think clearly and logically, exercise sound judgment, and make quick and appropriate decisions in emergency situations.

  • Recognize signs of danger to people, property and grounds associated with the campus, and its surrounding areas.

  • Be in good health with normal vision, hearing and dexterity, with the ability to withstand sudden energy demands.

  • Possess a positive attitude and have good oral and written communication skills.
