TECHNOLOGY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Our department delivers both technological services and collaborative, strategic thinking/implementation to the Whitman community. We organize ourselves into five interconnected teams: Client Services, Enterprise Technology, Technology Infrastructure, Instructional and Learning Technology, and Information Security. Instructional and Learning Technology Group
As part of Technology Services, our group's “bread and butter” is working closely with faculty to help them enhance and/or augment their pedagogical and scholarly goals through the effective application of technology. We passionately pursue this broad spectrum of activities in everything from helping faculty with day-to-day computing to supporting long term projects; from technical support of events, to examining and piloting exciting new uses of technology.

JOB PRIMARY PURPOSE

Play the lead role in management of Whitman College's Computational Chemistry Lab and the growing number of academic computer labs by deploying, maintaining, and supporting hardware and software; accomplish this with various technologies and close collaborations with other IT staff and faculty members. This position directly contributes to Whitman's mission and strategic priorities by ensuring lab technologies are efficiently, accurately, and securely managed.

This is a three year position with the possibility of continued employment beyond that time period.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with other IT staff to design and implement computer labs.
  • Provision computers for deployment in labs.
  • Package, install, and monitor OS and software deployment to labs.
  • Conduct software and OS compatibility testing prior to deploying updates.
  • Ensure lab computers' OS and software are up to date (pursuant to compatibility testing).
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware, and policy and/or package deployments.
  • Maintain software licensing server; ensure license serialization of client machines is correctly deployed and remains functional.
  • Assist with the physical installation of hardware as needed.
  • Retire old computers following department and college procedures.
  • Maintain lab computer inventory records following department procedures.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Passion for helping to support teaching and learning in higher education
  • Effective building of relationships with faculty, staff, and students
  • Unix/Linux proficiency:
    • Package installation and management in Unix environment
    • Troubleshoot network problems, (e.g. NFS Mounting)
    • Account creation and management
  • Proficiency in Mac and Windows OS
  • Demonstrated experience with programming, especially Python
  • Experience managing groups of computers in a networked environment
  • Ability to synthesize and analyze complex and/or diverse information
  • Ability to design workflows and procedures
  • Excellent written and oral communication, and the ability to work well in teams
  • Ability to manage student employees when relevant
  • Commitment for learning and experimenting with new skills
  • Value, respect, and welcoming of diverse human perspectives and experiences
  • Satisfactory clearance of background check


PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

The following attributes are not mandatory, but we desire as many as possible in the ideal candidate:
  • Proficiency with CentOS and/or Red Hat
  • Endpoint management system administration using tools like JAMF and/or SCCM to:
    • Package and deploy software
    • Monitor updates and patch management
    • Use scripting for process automation
  • Experience and/or interest in developing the management of high-performance computing environments
  • Experience and/or interest in evaluating and/or implementing cloud computing solutions


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in technology related field
