Employee & Labor Relations is a unit within Human Resources in the Finance and Administration portfolio. Finance and Administration is a vibrant and varied portfolio serving all aspects of campus life. Our employees perform a wide range of functions including offering essential financial tools and support to the university's many departments, providing key resources to employees, and keeping campus safe, clean, accessible, and beautiful.

Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Employee and Labor Relations reports to the Senior Director for Employee and Labor Relations.

This position, along with other employee and labor relations team members provides assistance to academic units for issues involving day-to-day administration of and negotiation of the University's contracts with United Academics and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation.

The person in this position is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the University's collective bargaining agreements, with a focus on the agreements with United Academics (UA) and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF). The Assistant Director will participate in bargaining as a member of the University bargaining team and assist in the preparation for bargaining. The Assistant Director may support other colleagues in Employee and Labor Relations with the administration of additional collective bargaining agreements and non-represented employee policies.

The Assistant Director will serve on a labor and employee relations team, with typical responsibilities including: providing collaborative and consultative advice and counsel on labor contract interpretation, application, and compliance for the university; participating in and supporting fact finding investigations, responding to information requests, and supporting the University representative at arbitration, mediation, and appeal hearings; conducting analysis and assessments, preparing reports and advisories, and recommending policies and programs that enrich and promote the integrity of the university's labor and employee relations functions; keeping current in the occupational field to include new developments in concepts, practices, and regulations; researching and analyzing the impact of changes in regulations and trends on operations; and designing and delivering comprehensive training on labor and employee relations topics.

This position demands a firm commitment to serving the University with sensitivity and professionalism. The position requires abundant self-confidence and the ability to multi-task many cases, processes, and unplanned happenings at one time. The ability to handle confidential material appropriately and maintain an institutional perspective is also critical.

The Assistant Director will work in close consultation with the Senior Director to make decisions and interpret policy.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree OR an equivalent combination of skills, experience, or education
  • Two years of experience in employee relations, human resources, dispute resolution, or similar function

    A Master's degree or Juris Doctorate may be substituted for one year of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in management, industrial relations, or related field or juris doctorate
  • Knowledge of Oregon employment law
  • Familiarity with university organizational structure, policy, and political issues in higher education
