University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR), increases support for and enhances knowledge of UC Berkeley through communications, public outreach, and fundraising. UDAR is responsible for fundraising and donor engagement, and works to strengthen unit development offices by consulting and partnering with campus fundraisers. UDAR also handles a range of central activities and services encompassing events, communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, database management, and more. In 2019-20, UC Berkeley raised a record $1.04 billion from 117,533 gifts, pledges, and private grants. The totals represent contributions from more than 61,000 donors, reflecting an increase of $404 million in gifts, pledges, and private grants over the previous fiscal year.
LIGHT THE WAY: THE CAMPAIGN FOR BERKELEY
In February 2020, the university publicly launched the largest fundraising campaign in its history, to raise $6 billion by the end of 2023. The ambitious goal—the highest set by any U.S. public university without a medical school—aims to secure UC Berkeley's status as the world's top public research and teaching university at a time when the state funds about 14 percent of its budget. Since its quiet phase began January 1, 2014, the campaign has already raised over $4.3 billion.
The campaign is focused on continuing UC Berkeley's tradition of comprehensive academic excellence, as well as its public mission and reputation as a powerful agent of upward mobility for low-income students. Funding priorities include creating 100 new tenure-track faculty positions; 300 new graduate student fellowships; a dramatic increase in the number of undergraduate scholarships; campus housing for all freshmen, sophomores and first-year transfer students; and support for research to transform health, the environment, and society.
The Major Gifts team within UDAR works to secure philanthropic support among University alumni, parents, and friends across a range of geographical regions with a focus on gifts in the $100,000-$2 million range. Geographically, the regional areas of focus of the team are Southern California, the greater Bay Area/Northern California region, and the greater New York metropolitan area. There are 18 staff on the Major Gifts team including three senior development directors in charge of each of the three regions, as well as gift officers and professional administrative staff.
The University of California, Berkeley seeks a strategic and accomplished development professional to lead its regional major gifts program in Southern California. Reporting to the Executive Director of Major Gifts, the Senior Director will help shape and implement a comprehensive regional major gifts strategy that ensures a collaborative approach to expanding the University's individual major gift activity in the Southern California region.
With nearly 200,000 alumni and parents in Southern California, a dedicated core group of current donors and leadership volunteers, and broad campus support, this role is pivotal for UC Berkeley's continued growth in the region.
The Senior Director will be based in either Southern California or Berkeley area with a donor portfolio focused on the greater Los Angeles Area, but also encompassing the broader Southern California region. They will manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, donors, and volunteer leaders with a focus on closing gifts in the $100k to $5M range. In addition, the Senior Director will manage and lead a team of three Southern California fundraisers and serve as the lead strategist in advancing Berkeley's philanthropic activity in Southern California.
Fundraising priorities are university-wide and require close collaboration with colleagues from across campus.
Leadership & Management
Lead the design of and
implementation of a strategic major gifts program for the Southern
California region in support of campaign goals and long-term
Develop and codify annual plans,
serve as the business lead for regional event strategy and
implementation. As needed, serve as an expert and internal
consultant on communications to major donor prospects in Southern
Set, support and monitor annual
fundraising goals and monthly gift officer activity metrics. Today
the team raises between $5M and $10M annually.
Proactively build high-trust
relationships with Assistant Deans, Chief Development Officers and
other advancement professionals based in colleges and in units to
amplify a culture of collaboration and partnership.
Lead, inspire and support a team of
remote professionals. Currently the team consists of three major
gift officers and one analyst. All members of the team except one
gift officer are based in Southern California and work out of their
include: recruiting, training, coaching, and directing staff and if
appropriate, taking corrective action.
- Serve as a key member of the Major Gifts management team with two Sr. Director peers. Help the Executive Director set direction, and contribute to a positive, result oriented, learning culture.
Oversee and support the ongoing
development of the Southern California Chancellor's Council - a
regional advisory board consisting of 18-25 volunteer leaders and
major donors. Communicate regularly with the Council Chair,
coordinate meetings and collaborate with the New York City and Asia
Chancellor's Council efforts. Identify, cultivate and recruit new

the Southern California region, which includes identifying and
scheduling high profile meetings with regional donors and
stakeholders, creating travel itineraries, coordinating and
documenting travel logistics, writing and compiling briefing

regional events and/or trying to increase their presence in the

- Track record of successful fundraising with individual major donors and regularly reaching or exceeding goals.
- Ability to lead, manage and inspire high levels of productivity and collegiality among a diverse workforce at a very high standard.
- Proven ability to think strategically while also managing the details and execution of complex projects.
- Willingness to travel frequently, which includes flying to either the Bay Area or Southern California at least once a month in addition to driving long distances across Southern California to meet with donors, prospects and colleagues.

- Relevant experience fundraising or working in an externally facing position in Southern California; first-hand knowledge of the Southern California philanthropic landscape - especially in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Salary & Benefits
