Assistant Research Scientist



Hopkins Population Center (HPC) at Johns Hopkins University ( https://popcenter.jhu.edu/ ) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Research Scientist with experience in social science applications of data science (network science, sensor data analysis, advanced demographic and statistical methods and models, epigenomics, and/or computational methodology.) The HPC is a nationally renowned population center providing research infrastructure for demography, reproductive health, and population health research at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The HPC is at the beginning of a multi-year expansion of facilitating innovative research that integrates social sciences and health sciences conceptually and methodologically. HPC Faculty Associates are engaged in research on topics including biosensors and health; population-scale networks and inequality; social factors and multi-omics; innovative demography, and reproductive health and family planning.

The Assistant Research Scientist will collaborate with the HPC leadership teams on the Center’s work facilitating research among faculty associates. S/he will serve as the scientific facilitator for the Scientific Core, coordinated with the Development Core for the Center’s primary research areas (Poverty & Inequality; Family, Maternal and Child Health; Sexual and Reproductive Health). Specifically, s/he will:

  • Coordinate each Research Theme Working Group’s activities;
  • Provide HPC Associates with methodological services under the guidance of Scientific Core leadership;
  • Assist early stage investigators in the identification and application of new methods and models to their research projects;
  • Develop and deliver educational programs on fundamental knowledge and applications of advanced methods specialized in the Scientific Core, including individual consultations, short courses, boot camps, and practicums;
  • Contribute to the design of training and research applications;
  • Coordinate annual and semi-annual conferences on methodological advances and applications.


The Research Scientist is supported and encouraged to pursue funding for her/his own research interests in research theme groups’ grant applications.

  • Ph.D. in Sociology, or Demography, or other social science field;
  • Strong interest in research on one or more of HPC’s primary research areas (Poverty & Inequality; Family, Maternal and Child Health; Sexual and Reproductive Health), ideally demonstrated in peer-reviewed publication and grant applications;
  • Training and experience in data science (network science, sensor data analysis, advanced demographic and statistical methods and models, epigenomics, computational methodology), with information on courses taking and project participation;
  • Experience with managing and analyzing large data sets;
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
