Lead a team within a unit to accomplish daily operations that support the mission of the department and university.
ResponsibilitiesValdosta State University (VSU), located in South Georgia, enrolls more than 11,000 students each year and has a residential population of nearly 3,000. The City of Valdosta was named ESPN’s Title Town USA for the long history of athletic championships at Valdosta State and the local school systems. In addition, Sports and recreation are an active part of community life. VSU’s Campus Recreation serves more than 8,000 students, employees, and local community members each year. In addition, the department is staffed by nine full-time professionals, five graduate assistants, and a student staff of more than 150 students. Campus Recreation provides programs and support through four primary functional areas: fitness and wellness; intramurals and competitive sports; aquatics and life guard training; outdoor recreation and Red Cross training. The Operations Supervisor will be responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of a functional area of Campus Recreation while also providing leadership and supervision to a full-time Recreational Coordinator responsible for a different functional area. The Operations Supervisor, reporting to the Director, serves on the department’s leadership team. The Operations Supervisor contributes to the development and execution of the department strategic planning, budget planning, training of staff, recruiting and hiring Graduate Assistants and student employees, and oversight of assigned administration responsibilities in the absence of the Director. The Operations Supervisor will directly assess the two functional areas of responsibility to ensure that the needs of our patrons are being met and the work of these areas are meeting department, Division, and University goals. As a member of the Division of Student Affairs, the Operations Supervisor may also represent the department on a number of Division initiatives, projects, and events across the University.
Typical Allocation of Duties:
Manage and assign - 50%
Assign projects and tasks to team. Manage workloads and track time
spent on projects and tasks. Supervise personnel to accomplish
day-to-day operations of assigned functions.
Enhance quality of services - 20%
Assess quality of services provided. Recommend improvements to
processes and services. Implement improvements and train employees
in best practices.
Facilitate service continuity -
15%
Facilitate cross-training and dissemination of institutional and
professional knowledge for service continuity.
Compliance - 15%
Interact with federal, state, local, and professional entities to
ensure compliance with appropriate statutes and regulations.
Supervisor Expectations:
The Operations Supervisors must have experience in delivering effective programs and services in one of the four functional areas of Campus Recreation. A commitment to exceptional customer service, timely communications, a positive attitude, and professionalism in the workplace should be demonstrated. Experience with supervision or the ability to articulate readiness for supervision is expected.
Required QualificationsRequired Experience
Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of related work
experience.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Position May Require Credit Check (if using P-Card, working with Cash, etc.).
Position Requires completion of VSU’s Annual Compliance Training course (such as State Business Transactions, Drug Free Workplace, Anti-Harassment Policy, Introduction to Information Security, Workers Compensation, Motor Vehicle Policy, USG Ethics Policy, Conflict of Interest/ Outside Activities Policy, Leave Procedures for Faculty and Staff, Georgia Open Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Contracts 101. Supervisory positions require training in FMLA and Worker’s Compensation.
