Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Perinatal Access Program Coordinator ( PAP Coordinator) works to reduce the administrative barriers to the healthcare system for undocumented pregnant women and their children of the Greater Richmond Metropolitan and Tri-City areas. The bilingual PAP Coordinators receive referrals from Community Health Providers, VCUHS Women’s Health nurses, social workers, VCUHS billing dept and patients directly contacting VCUHS . Patients are screened by PAP Coordinators for the Emergency Medicaid eligibility and help complete the Medicaid application, obtain verifications, and medical records. The PAP Coordinator also uses Cerner and IDX to create a medical record number and schedule an appointment for the patient. PAP Coordinators also provide VCUHS labor & delivery tours, breastfeeding information, serve as a bilingual Spanish/English interpreters and translators, and act as an intermediary with VCUHS billing. In addition, they advocate for patients during challenging situations, such as unpaid bills sent to collections, applications for social security disability benefits, obtain birth certificates and social security cards, direct patients to services for domestic violence, perinatal loss, child’s developmental delay, child support enforcement, etc.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Excellent communication skills. Proficiency in Spanish oral and written communication. Experience performing community outreach. Organizational skills, ability to set goals, juggle priorities, manage time and meet deadlines. Must be available to attend meetings or meet with clients after hours, on an as-needed-basis. Maintain confidentiality of patient information. Self-motivated, able to work independently and on a team. Exercise judgment in work settings, and assures appropriate action is taken to assist clients. Experience with patient interviewing and basic medical terminology. Must have valid drivers license. High school graduate or equivalent. Ability to work in a diverse environment is required.

Preferred Hiring Standards

Experience in determining Emergency Medicaid eligibility.
