Position Summary:
The Department of Art and Design at Monmouth University is seeking applications for a full-time, Specialist Professor in Art Foundations. This anticipated opening is a non-tenure track position is for the 2021-2022 academic year and is a two-year initial appointment subject to subsequent multi-year reappointments without limit. Review of applications will begin on February 15 and continue until the position is filled.

Given that our department houses majors who concentrate in Studio Arts, Photography, Graphic and Interactive Design, and Animation, we seek a dynamic colleague to develop our students' solid foundations in composition and design while promoting creativity and critical thinking. Ideal candidates will bring a broad vision of contemporary visual art and innovative approaches to foundational art pedagogy, including incorporating digital tools into intro-level studio courses.

Courses to be taught include the current Basic Design and Composition as well as Basic Design and Color. Additionally, teaching abilities in Painting and Drawing are preferred. The teaching load for the specialist line is includes three studio courses per semester (3 credits, 4.5 contact hours each). The position includes full benefits. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

We seek someone who is passionate about students' first-year experience, engaging as a point person for students who are in their early years in the department. This new hire will help coordinate the way Foundation, Drawing, and Painting courses are taught and assessed. They will also collaborate with faculty across the department so that the lessons in our core classes interconnect and enrich each other, leading to possible course revision and/or the development of new curricula. Because we are a student-centered university, faculty members work closely with students toward both academic advising and career mentorship. Other responsibilities after the first year include University/School/Department committee work and assisting in the recruitment and retention of students.

Candidates should be actively practicing artists with a substantial knowledge of historical and current theoretical discourse in the visual arts. They should hold a genuine commitment to excellence in teaching and professional practice.

Other Requirements:
Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art or equivalent terminal degree.

Two years of full-time (or equivalent) college-level teaching.

Active interest in, application, and exploration of Art Foundations.

Ongoing maintenance of disciplinary currency.

Expertise in digital imaging within a foundational-level teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience and scholarship in Painting and Drawing.

Work with curriculum development.

Remote teaching experience and virtual/hybrid course development.
