Position Description

As a member of the Opera, Jazz, and Dance Department the Production Stage Coordinator will manage the day-to-day operations of each department. This position serves as the primary contact for the Opera, Jazz Conservatory and Dance/BFAs programs, and will provide administrative and technical support as requested. The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate on the spot problem solving capabilities and engage in creative thinking to overcome challenges. This person must demonstrate an understanding of the artistic process. Candidate will have strong communication skills and diplomacy in a high-stress environment. This position will report to the Production Services Manager

Located in the heart of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon Cultural District, the Peabody Institute was founded in 1857 as America’s first academy of music. Today, through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory music and dance school, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and at every level.

Note: This position follows a 37.5 hours per week schedule for 10-month periods September- June and leave without pay July- August

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for organization, planning and execution in coordination with stage, artistic, and technical staff to produce quality product on a short timeline.
  • Serve as liaison between Production department and Opera, Jazz and Dance.
  • Work within and manage production budgets set by department head.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for students and manage their engagement with department heads.
  • Work with the Scheduling Coordinator, ensure that Arts Vision is kept up to date and accurate with all departmental schedules.
  • Publish weekly department rehearsal schedules anticipating any upcoming conflicts mitigating any problems.
  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsals.
  • Acts as stage manager for all major performances or outsources staff if deemed necessary.
  • Serve as first point of contact for all visiting artists. Manage all aspects of artist inquires including auditioning, teaching, masterclasses, travel, and housing.
  • Work with the Production Manager to staff technical positions required for a performance.
  • Oversee, and hires student workers.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize working within three departments.
  • Organize and manage props and costumes for both Opera and Dance.
  • Maintain safe and clean rehearsal spaces.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace always.
  • Provide support and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in music) or equivalent related experience required.
  • Related stage production and audio visual, recording arts experience is required.
  • Experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special skills and requirements

  • Professional experience as a stage manager for theater, music, or dance.
  • Ability to read music.
  • Advanced knowledge of the day-to-day workings of managing a stage production.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts: evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook

Specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Ability to walk, stand, climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift to 50 pounds.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
