General summary/purpose:

The Tumor Microenvironment Technology Development Center is looking for an organized, detail-oriented Programmer Analyst to help us program and maintain and a database system and pipeline to store and query images from samples stained for multiplexed immunofluorescence. The goal of this database is to become the largest collection of whole slide imagery of tumor samples from patients world-wide.

The main job responsibilities are to analyze, program, de-bug, and implement simulation models with related analysis to support the Tumor Microenvironment Technology Development Center project aims. The Programmer Analyst is a key member of the team who will continue to develop and automate the pipeline of image processing. Further responsibilities include running custom analyses using the database, tracking task completion and work flow, documenting the code, managing new expansions according to the project aims, debugging the program, developing periodic summary reports, and contributing to scientific products that disseminate the findings of the models.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Use advanced knowledge base to formulate and analyze computer simulation models and statistical models.
  • Write custom code in Matlab, R, Python or other general programming language to facilitate simulations.
  • Debug and maintain (version control) the computer code through various stages of the project.
  • Execute the simulation models using high-performance computing services via cloud or local clusters.
  • Complete and maintain professional documentation for projects and deliverables, develop SOPs as needed.
  • Co-author scientific reports, abstracts, and publications with contribution of original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis.
  • Recommend improvements to existing software programs as necessary
  • Attend weekly team meetings via Skype or similar platform.
  • Uses professional judgment in handling information and be sensitive to project team, individual and all levels of organizational concerns.
  • Clearly and regularly communicate with management, technical support colleagues, and research team investigators.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor degree in mathematics, statistics, biostatics, industrial engineering, computer science, information systems, physics, or related field.
  • One (1) year related experience.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Mastery of Matlab or other general programming language (e.g. R),Rpackages, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • REDCap experience also of interest.
  • Experience with object-oriented programing and version control.
  • Experience with high performance computing services.
  • Solid planning and organizational skills, ability to prioritize work independently and work for periods of time without daily direction from investigators.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to read and comprehend research requirements, execute programming, simulation and modeling tasks to facilitate computational research studies.
  • Excellent written and communication skills, including the ability to provide meticulous documentation of processes and organize materials.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a positive attitude that allows all problems to be broken into manageable parts and tackled (comes from a place of “yes”).
  • Excellent personal skills that can enable enjoyable collaboration with diverse study staff and investigators.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
