Cellist to Co-Direct the Suzuki/Rolland-based Young People’s String Program (YPSP) and teach in the YPSP and in the String Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.

This position, along with the YPSP Co-Director, Upper Strings, will be responsible for the development and oversight of Peabody Preparatory’s Young People’s String Program, which provides a comprehensive private and Group Class instruction to beginners through middle school. The upper strings includes approximately eight faculty and seventy students, with seven cello Group Classes.

LOCATION : The Peabody Preparatory shares space with the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore, and offers strings at two satellite branches in the communities of Towson and Howard County, MD. The Preparatory is more than 100 years old and has approximately 2,000 students studying all instruments, dance, theory, early childhood, orchestra and more. We embrace the novice as well as the serious student aspiring to a career in music.

Supervises: YPSP Associate Director, Upper Strings, YPSP Administrative Coordinator, YPSP Upper String Group Class faculty

Duties and Responsibilities (*with the YPSP Co-Director, Upper Strings):


  • Develop, guide and expand the Peabody YPSP Lower Strings core curriculum
  • Coordinate procedures with the Co-Chairs and oversee department placements for lower strings, ages 11 and under.
  • Conduct student/parent orientations.
  • Develop and organize YPSP concerts, guests, outreach and special events.*
  • Regularly gather and review program feedback from faculty, students and parents*
  • Working with faculty and the String Co-Chairs or Director of the Preparatory as needed, manage any student and family issues as they arise.


  • Assign, supervise and evaluate YPSP faculty teaching Lower Strings Group Classes, Cello Fun and Intro to Cello.
  • Provide Group Class training and materials
  • Participate in faculty hiring for YPSP; including credential review, interviews, and recommendations
  • Establish high standards for YPSP and communicate those to YPSP faculty.*
  • Schedule YPSP meetings regularly.*
  • Serve as YPSP faculty mentor by answering questions, offering informal and formal feedback on student performance and teaching, involving faculty in decision making and program development.*
  • Communicate deadlines to YPSP faculty for information pertaining to YPSP events.*
  • Working with faculty, Co-Chairs and the Director of the Preparatory as needed, manage any faculty issues as they arise.


  • Along with the Director of the Preparatory and finance, develop and Manage YPSP budget.*
  • Monitor enrollments and class details in ASAP working with finance to determine plans for under enrolled YPSP, Cello Fun and Intro classes including communicating with families*
  • Oversee all YPSP publications, programs, and web content.*
  • Oversee YPSP Lower Strings shared faculty documents that facilitate communication among YPSP faculty (Group Rosters, Solo Sign-Up, core repertoire, etc.)
  • Plan, coordinate, and prepare content for inclusion in ASAP online registration system for all group class and placement classes.*
  • Serve on Peabody Preparatory’s Director’s Council
  • Participate in String Department coordinator and faculty meetings and participate in the evolution of a creative department


  • Teach cello in the YPSP and may teach non-YPSP students at any level.
  • Teach YPSP Group Classes on Saturdays Downtown, and possibly at either the Towson or Howard County campus on a weekday.

COMPENSATION: Dependent upon experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, a Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Must have over five years teaching experience.
  • Must love and have experience teaching young children. Experience teaching a range of levels and abilities is preferred.
  • Pedagogical training and familiarity with Suzuki repertoire and Paul Rolland’s approach, and experience and comfort in teaching repertoire outside of and beyond Suzuki books.
  • Candidate should have strong administrative experience (experience in a music institution a plus)
  • Ability to work collegially but independently
  • Ability to multi-task and think strategically
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills
  • Possess a high comfort level with technology ideally with extensive experience with Microsoft Office Suite products or Google Docs required.
