The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChemBE) at Johns Hopkins University seeks applicants for a full-time teaching position. This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment whose focus is the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses, related to the candidate's background. These positions typically carry a two (or three) course load per semester, with an additional one or two course-equivalents in departmental and/or university service-related responsibilities. In total, this leads to a load of six course-equivalents of responsibility. Teaching faculty typically have advising responsibilities for undergraduate students. Extensive grading support is given to all instructors. The university has a well-defined non-tenure track career path for full-time teaching faculty culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor.

Johns Hopkins is a private university known for its commitment to academic excellence and research. ChemBE is one of nine academic departments in the Whiting School of Engineering, on the beautiful Homewood Campus. We are located in Baltimore, MD in close proximity to Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA. See the department webpages at https://engineering.jhu.edu/chembe/ for additional information about the department, including undergraduate programs and current course descriptions.

Johns Hopkins is a community committed to sharing values of diversity and inclusion in order to achieve and sustain excellence. We firmly believe that we can best promote excellence by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of students, faculty and staff and by creating a climate of respect that is supportive of their success. This climate for diversity, inclusion and excellence is critical to attaining the best research, scholarship, teaching, health care, and other strategic goals of the University. Taken together, these values are recognized and supported fully by the Johns Hopkins Institutions' leadership at all levels. Further, we recognize that the responsibility for excellence, diversity and inclusion lies with all of us at the Institutions: leadership, administration, faculty, staff, and students.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and teaching experience. The candidate will aspire to push innovations in engineering education; help develop curriculum and other programmatic initiatives; be comfortable teaching larger groups of students (up to 100 students); and have a strong technical background in a chemical or biological engineering or related field. It is preferred, but not required, that the candidate be comfortable trouble-shooting and building equipment in a chemical engineering lab (i.e., plumbing, electronics, interfacing associated with heat exchangers, separation columns, and reactors) and have some knowledge of LabView. Industry experience, while not required, is an asset.

The faculty member will join an existing group of Teaching-track Junior and Senior Lecturers in the program led by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. This position will be filled at the Junior or Senior Lecturer level with a renewable contract, commensurate with the candidate's experience and current rank. A Senior Lecturer appointment requires teaching with distinction for no fewer than five years at a similar university. Criteria for promotion include excellence in teaching, educational publications, curriculum development, and pedagogical innovation. The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary and benefits options including health and retirement plan participation. The start date for this position is August 1, 2021, with a phase-in of teaching duties.

The Johns Hopkins University is committed to equal opportunity for its faculty, staff, and students. To that end, the university does not discriminate on the basis of sex, gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status or other legally protected characteristic. The university is committed to providing qualified individuals access to all academic and employment programs, benefits and activities on the basis of demonstrated ability, performance and merit without regard to personal factors that are irrelevant to the program involved.
