Business and Technology Career Specialist
The Aspire Center is the hub of activity for The Aspire Program with a scope of work that extends well beyond the work of a traditional career center - this 4-year career development program also helps students to develop skills in entrepreneurship, leadership, and creativity. Carthage’s location in the Milwaukee to Chicago corridor provides students access to a wide range of experiential learning and post-graduate opportunities, and its unique J-term and off-campus study programs have historically provided global options to expand students’ perspectives on the world.

The center consists of a small and growing team doing work that will make a real impact in both on- and off-campus communities. In an average day, we’re as likely to be strategizing about regional workforce development needs as planning a program with on-campus colleagues for first years to explore their sense of purpose. We’re like a start-up housed in an established organization, and we are looking for people who are energized by the trials and triumphs of building a new program. The ideal candidate is someone who is flexible, creative, curious, and collaborative. Career specialists bring work experience related to their target field and/or working with high school or college students.
The Business and Technology Career Specialist will assist a caseload of ~500 students interested in business and technology-related majors and fields, including accounting, computer science, economics, eSports, finance, marketing, management, and related areas of study with fulfilling the expectations associated with The Aspire Program learning goals and 4-year plan. The career specialist will work closely with faculty in Carthage’s new School of Business and Economics.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT/EXTERNAL RELATIONS
- Build a schedule of formal and informal learning opportunities
in collaboration with campus partners, alumni, and employers to:
- Help students explore their interests and options; sense of purpose and balancing personal and professional life roles
- Teach students about expectations in their fields of interest
- Provide necessary connections to help students secure meaningful mentoring and experiential education options
- Cultivate candidate pools to connect students with specific project-based learning experiences, internships, and jobs.
- Secure post-graduate outcomes related to their goals and to transition into new roles successfully
- Examples include hosting career-related workshops, guest speakers, networking events, interviewing days, site visits, and career fairs, as well as peer and alumni mentoring experiences. You will have unique opportunities to help students understand their multiple life roles.
- Design programs that expand students’ perspectives on personal and group identities and the role of internal and external factors in making decisions, understanding personal motivation, building an entrepreneurial/growth mindset, developing curiosity/creativity, and setting achievable goals.
- Contribute to campus-wide efforts to strengthen students’ cultural competence, using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and other tools; integrate relevant coaching into students’ iAspire Plans.
ADVISING & RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
- Advise students (individually and in small groups) on the full range of career development and search tasks from career exploration to obtaining experiential learning and securing post-graduate opportunities consistent with their goals.
- Help students recognize opportunities for developing career readiness skills, including problem/opportunity identification, leadership development, and communication skills.
- Develop resource materials to inform students and other community members about best practices related to Aspire’s learning goals.
COMMUNICATION & ASSESSMENT
- Participate in data collection and assessment efforts in alignment with office-wide goals and measures.
- Promote The Aspire Program and Carthage College to prospective and current students, as well as other key audiences.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse community of students/alumni, faculty, and staff
- Demonstrated commitment to understanding cultural competence, unconscious bias, and historic inequities that influence students’ ability to succeed in and after college; comfortable engaging others in difficult conversations to build understanding and address inequities
- Experience in advising, teaching, or counseling; experience with high school or college-aged students is preferred
- Able to use technology required for the role, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, GSuite, LinkedIn and similar productivity and social media tools. It is helpful, but not required to have experience with databases/information management tools, such as Salesforce, Handshake, Less Annoying CRM, or Smartsheet
- Possess effective written and verbal communication skills across mediums with attentiveness to detail, tone, and audience
- Being qualified to interpret career, personality, or cultural competence assessments is a plus; however, on-the-job training can also be provided (examples of assessments that may be used in the role include: PathwayU, Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator, and Intercultural Development Inventory)
- Experience prioritizing immediate and longer term work, as well as managing competing priorities
- Available to work some evenings and weekends
- Candidates should have a willingness to travel occasionally to complete College business as permitted by public health conditions — primarily in Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, and Chicagoland area, occurring primarily within normal business hours.
