We are searching for an experienced PT Interpreter (Trainee - Level V)
Provide clear and accurate interpreting/translating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in all college related activities, classes, programs and events. Provide assistance to students, including scanning documents and textbooks into alternate format, scribing, reading, proctoring exams and assisting with registration.
Trainee: Mentor with current full time Staff Interpreters to improve interpreting skills, ability, self-critique, analysis of work, and ability to accept and incorporate feedback. Learn appropriate on the job ethics and behaviors required in the field of interpreting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpreter Trainee will mentor with a current staff interpreter to improve interpreting skills, ability, self-critique, analysis of work, and ability to accept and integrate feedback. Learn appropriate on-the-job ethics and behaviors required in the field of interpreting.
- Certified Interpreters will interpret for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in classroom settings and at college related activities.
- Utilize several modes of communication including ASL, Signed English, Contact Variety English Contact Variety ASL, and/or Oral methods.
- Follow the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Texas Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Code of Ethics.
- Discuss with the student their preferred/appropriate seating arrangements.
- Use the Interpreter Coordinator as a resource to help with problem solving as necessary.
- Report schedule changes, appropriateness of skill level for a particular class, faculty cooperation, course content or style, and feedback about student's use of Interpreter to the Interpreter Coordinator.
- Adhere to the college and department policies and procedures.
- Perform Interpreter skill building activities to continually improve/enhance current knowledge and skills related to interpreting.
- Attend and participate in annual in-service training sessions and workshop.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Ensure student and class information is secured on a daily basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Perform all duties and maintain all standards in accordance with college policies, procedures and Core Values.
Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in Sign Language Interpreting desired; or a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an interpreter in a college, university setting, or Deaf Service Agency, desired.
Level I (Basic) – Level V (Master):Current Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification, or current national equivalent certification required.

- Interpreter I (212PT):BEI Basic certification or equivalent (Equivalent certifications: BEI Level I, NIC)
- Interpreter II (214PT):BEI Level II certification or equivalent (Equivalent certifications: CI, CT, IC, IT)
- Interpreter III (219PT):BEI Advanced certification or equivalent (Equivalent certifications: BEI Level III, NIC Advanced, CSC, IC/TC, CI/CT, RSC, CDI)
- Interpreter IV (221PT):BEI Level IV certification or equivalent (Equivalent certifications: MCSC, SCL
- Interpreter V (222PT):BEI Master certification or equivalent (Equivalent certifications: BEI Level V, NIC Master)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Code of Professional Conduct
- Knowledge of deaf culture
- Knowledge of the proper use of an interpreter
- Knowledge of text conversion into formats such as PDF, WORD, audio and braille
- Interpersonal skills
- Customer service skills
- Computer and applicable software skills
- Organizational skills
- Ability to interpret and sign ASL
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to attend workshops on a variety of interpreting topics
- Ability to research, apply for and attend continuing education classes
- Minimum accumulative GPA of 3.0 in all Interpreting classes
- Knowledge of Deaf Culture
- Awareness of Interpreter Professional Code of Conduct
- Fluency in spoken English
- Basic fluency in American Sign Language
- Strong organizational skills

- Passion for the Interpreting Profession
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions. Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office environment. Little physical effort required.
