About the Opportunity:
Under the general supervision of the Electrical Supervisor, the Trades Trainee Level I - Electrician assists in the installation and maintenance of electrical distribution and lighting systems across the University.

Responsibilities:
They inspect and repair various in-place electrical fixtures, and support new-construction installation activities in both general office and specialized facilities.These staff members work under close supervision, and are instructed via diagrams or oral instructions, indicating the specific nature of the repair or installation to be made, the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls, and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment to be used. Electricians I refer to pertinent drawings, service manuals, and other trade instructions to complete tasks according to established guidelines and code. Electricians I identify and report equipment problems and failures and engage in routine problem-solving under the direction of their supervisor or foreman.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma, or the math and language skill set equivalent to that of a high school graduate.
  • Completion of or enrollment in formal trade school training in at least one of the following: HVAC/R, Stationary Engineering, Electric, Plumbing, Electronics Technician or related discipline; or have at least two years of relevant on-the-job experience in the trade or a combination of both.
  • Ability to read and understand meters and various types of monitoring equipment such as CO2 monitors, electrical meters and multi-meters.
  • Possess trade-related math skills appropriate for this level of work; be able to read, write, and understand written and spoken English; and be familiar with the use of schematics and plans.
  • Ability to work effectively, either independently or in a team environment in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Possess a working knowledge of personal computers and basic applications. Demonstrated proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Possess a valid state of residence driver's license. Applicants will be subject to a driving record evaluation and background investigation.
  • Complete and pass a criminal background check.
  • Successfully complete a 90-day probationary period.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management system (Archibus).
  • Utility locating and damage prevention experience.
  • Experience in emergency response, hazardous materials handling, applicable OSHA/EPA regulations.

Special Working Conditions:
  • This position is 40 hours a week. Hours of work may change from time to time including assignment to second and third shift work.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • May be required to work holidays and weekend overtime. Electrician I's are considered Essential Personnel may be required to work during peak workload time and occasional weekend support for University projects.
  • Must be able to lift up to a minimum of 50 lbs. and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others. May use chain falls and come alongs for heavier lifting.
  • Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as required.
  • Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time; work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods; routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools, equipment and other essentials to and from the job site.
  • Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, scaffolding, roofs, staging, lifts, etc. and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls beyond the normal workday.
  • Use of personal protective equipment.
  • Outside work during all types of weather.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
  • Operation of vehicles and industrial equipment.
  • Assist other trades as directed.
  • Newly-hired staff receive regularly-scheduled certification safety training as required by EPA and OSHA/MOSH in the use of MSDS, respirators, scaffolding, ladders, fall protection gear, lockout/tag out, forklifts, aerial platforms, and confined space.
  • May undergo periodic occupational physical.
