The Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI) of Columbia University invites applications for a full-time appointment as Associate Research Scholar in Modern Tibetan Studies beginning summer 2021. The Institute is searching for an associate research scholar who studies Tibet from any of a broad range of disciplines, including literature, history, religion, anthropology, material culture or film studies. The incumbent will also serve as Director of the Modern Tibetan Studies Program at the WEAI. In this role, the incumbent will teach one course each semester, direct event programming, and seek/implement grants, as well as pursue their own research. Ideally, one course each year would be offered in coordination with Columbia’s Global Core Curriculum, focusing on teaching about Tibet in a global context. The incumbent will participate in collaborative projects with other Tibetan studies scholars, staff and students, and they will be an active participant in day-to-day WEAI programs and events. The initial appointment is for one year with multi-year renewals contingent on successful reviews.

In addition to a Ph.D. the incumbent should have a substantial research background; teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate level; a record of publications; a track record of working in China and Tibet; and knowledge of and experience with research communities in China, Europe, Tibet and U.S. Preference will be given to candidates who speak Tibetan, and the incumbent must have the ability to read and write Tibetan at a basic level in order to conduct research using primary source materials.
