General summary/purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technologist performs a variety of both routine and complex research laboratory procedures in accordance with established standards and protocols. This individual will be expected to acquire a level of knowledge to properly analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Specific duties may vary according to project assigned

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of research laboratory techniques with primary focus on genetics and cell biology related to the study of murine models, cancer and stem cell biology, and blood diseases.
  • Techniques to be performed include, but are not limited to: mouse genotyping and phenotyping, murine tumor models, PCR, gel electrophoresis; cell culture (including primary cells and/or stem cells) experience is a plus.
  • Prepares and determines suitability of solutions and reagents following defined formulas and procedures. Documents and reports all experimental results.
  • Completes required logs and supporting documents.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur.
  • Performs related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Basic laboratory research experience is preferred.
  • Experience with mouse genotyping and phenotyping, mouse cancer models, and cell culture is a plus.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • This work requires precision and attention to detail.
  • Individual should have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
  • Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a dynamic laboratory

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
