General summary/purpose:

Our laboratory, part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, focuses on investigating pathogenic pathways and finding novel therapeutic targets for genetic neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia, Huntington’s disease, spinocerebellar degenerative disorders. We make extensive use of cell and animal models and employ a variety of molecular and biochemical techniques.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Molecular and biochemical assays on cells and rodent and human tissues. Tasks will include protein and RNA extraction and purification, cell transfection, PCR, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, and molecular cloning.
  • Cell culture involving multiple cell types, including iPSCs.
  • Potential role in management of mouse colonies, including routine care, breeding, injections, behavioral testing, and tissue harvesting and preparation.
  • Assistance with routine lab operations, including ordering laboratory supplies, compliance with regulatory requirements, care and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and coordinating among laboratory research projects.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.

Preferred qualifications:

Some related research laboratory work experience.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Basic understanding of laboratory procedures.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
