Position Summary:

This position is located at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Medical Sciences in the service area of Emergency Medicine.

Principal Duties:

Tenure track faculty at the University of Wisconsin are expected to participate in clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, interns and residents; participate in continuing education programs; and to conduct basic science or clinical research that advances academic clinical practice. The successful candidate will participate in the clinical activities of the teaching hospital including the provision of patient care; and instruction and supervision of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Availability and willingness to consult with referring veterinarians and clients, as well as to provide supervision of the emergency and critical services as well as direct patient care, is vitally important. Approximately 28,700 small animal patients are evaluated at UW Veterinary Care annually. The Emergency Service case-load exceeds 6,000 cases per year.

Duties include, not are not limited to:

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES 25%
1. Up to 12 weeks of clinical coverage and teaching service
2. Training and supervision of residents and interns
3. Clinical teaching of 4th year veterinary students

NON-CLINICAL TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES 20%
1. Didactic teaching
2. Laboratory course teaching

RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES 45%
1. Contribute and participate in clinical research in the ECC section

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES 10%
1. Involvement in committees at the Department, School and University level along with involvement at the professional committee level.
2. Participation in continuing education programs for veterinary practitioners in Wisconsin

Degree and Area of Specialization:

DVM (or equivalent) is required; Board certification or board eligibility in Emergency and Critical Care required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Academic experience or relevant practice experience beyond residency training is preferred but not mandatory.

A successful candidate must have a documented track record of academic productivity or have demonstrated potential to develop an independent research program in a basic science or clinically- orientated research field relevant to veterinary emergency medicine and/or critical care medicine.

Aptitude and/or experience in clinical instruction of DVM students, interns, and residents are also expected. Distribution of effort in the section and the Department will be determined in accordance with service needs, academic priorities and the candidate's expertise and academic goals. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with all sections of the school, hospital and department.

License or Certificate:

Must be eligible to obtain licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin.

Having two position vacancy listings allows the School of Veterinary Medicine to consider candidates with both tenrue-track faculty credentials and non-tenure-track faculty credentials for this position.

The Department of Medical Sciences of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary invites applications for a clinical track faculty, full-time, renewable Assistant or Associate Professor position within the Emergency and Critical Care Section of the UW Veterinary Care Hospital. The successful candidate will join the current team of three clinical track faculty providing clinical service within the UW Veterinary Care Hospital on the UW-Madison campus.

Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exist within the School of Veterinary Medicine and the UW-Madison campus. The School of Medicine & Public Health, the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences and the Biotechnology Center are located within a short distance of the School of Veterinary Medicine on the UW-Madison campus. A close relationship also exists with the Wisconsin State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which is located adjacent to the School of Veterinary Medicine. UW-Madison considers the School of Veterinary Medicine to be a major factor in its overall success as a top five university in terms of awarded federal funding. The school is also a major factor in Madison's emergence as a hub of commercial biotechnology, including regenerative medicine technologies.
