This is a 2-year appointment

The Professional in Residence at the Newhouse School’s WAER -FM will produce news content across multiple platforms for this NPR affiliate station at Syracuse University. Under the direction of the General Manager and News Director, this staff person will collaborate in story idea generation and production of audio, digital and even video stories. This person will also serve as liaison and mentor to students at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications who are working at or collaborating with WAER -FM. The Professional in Residence may also be assigned to teach at least one course each fall and spring semester at the Newhouse School as an adjunct professor to further collaboration between the station and school.

The successful candidate will have at least five years of journalism experience across multiple platforms, including audio. Teaching or mentoring experience is a plus. The Professional in Residence is designed to be a two year experience at Syracuse University.


Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years experience in journalism field with experience in story idea generation and production across multiple platforms, specifically radio/audio.

Experience leading a team in order to mentor students required.

Job Specific Qualifications

Experienced professional to lead a new, limited (2 year) engagement to serve as liaison between the Newhouse School and WAER, an NPR affiliate radio station at Syracuse University.

Mentorship skills to give students a vision of what the modern day content creator role can look like.


Produce news content across multiple platforms for WAER, an NPR affiliate station. Collaborate on story idea generation with the General Manager. Produce audio, digital and video stories for all platforms — radio, web, social, etc.

Mentor to Newhouse students who are working at or collaborating with WAER . Leverage the new organizational alignment of WAER under the Newhouse School’s umbrella to create new opportunities for students to produce work that can be distributed via WAER .

May teach at least one course each fall and spring semester at the Newhouse School.
