Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics at the University at Buffalo is seeking a Chinese Language Lecturer for a 10-month (academic-year commitment) full-time, non-tenure track position with an initial two-year appointment with possible renewal, contingent on performance, department need, and availability of program funding.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities include teaching three Chinese language courses per semester at different levels, as well as providing assistance to the Director in the development of the Chinese Program, including training and supervising graduate and undergraduate student teaching assistants and other instructors, conducting placement tests and interviews, and (online) material development. Applicants must be able to regularly teach in-person classes on the University at Buffalo campus beginning fall 2021. The Chinese Program is looking for applicants who can contribute to a thriving Chinese program at UB. Successful candidates will be committed to teaching all levels of Chinese including First Year Chinese and upper level Literary Chinese (文言文) courses.

In addition to the lecturer position, there may also be positions for individuals interested in teaching Chinese courses at the University at Buffalo as an adjunct instructor. Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are a Master’s degree in a relevant field including Chinese language pedagogy, second language acquisition, Chinese linguistics, Chinese literature and culture; native or near-native proficiency in Chinese and English; experience in teaching Chinese language to English-speaking students at the university level, and demonstrated teaching effectiveness. Must be able to regularly teach in-person classes on the University at Buffalo campus.

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of experience teaching Chinese at the university level is preferred. Also, preference will be given to candidates who have solid understanding of linguistic properties of Chinese and are familiar with contemporary second language teaching methodologies, instructional technologies and curriculum development.
